A Fast Break Into a New Career 🆕

"It is a bit nerve-wracking to take a horse sight-unseen off only pictures and videos, but I trusted Morgan’s judgment, and based on my experience working for the program, I knew that the New Vocations trainers had an excellent reputation for matching horses and riders. I also knew that New Vocations stands behind its horses and is committed to making thoughtful, appropriate matches. That gave me the confidence to trust the process. So, I finalized the adoption and had him shipped to me."

The ! 🏇 Throughout the month of May, we are featuring Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbred crosses. Here, a USDF Region 2 rider shares how her life revolves around the breed – from living in Thoroughbred horse country, a career at a racehorse adoption facility, to her own Thoroughbred dressage partner!

Sterling is back from his winter lease and will be getting back out to some eventing/jumper shows this summer.

He’s a fun, rideable horse who benefits from consistent work, and I’m looking forward to continuing his development as we head into show season.

Now available to the right home - message for more information.

Kai’s canter strength is coming back quickly as he returns to consistent work.

The right lead is still a bit harder for him to balance, but his connection is becoming more consistent each ride.

The focus right now is maintaining a relaxed, steady rhythm while encouraging him to lengthen his neck, so he can stay soft through the topline instead of getting tight when he feels unsure.

These pieces are starting to come together as he gets stronger and more confident, and the work is becoming more consistent overall.

Working on trot/canter transitions with Kai.

This is a common area where Thoroughbreds coming off the track need time to develop strength… especially on the right lead. They often want to run into the transition or lose balance coming back to trot rather than stepping through it.

Kai has also had some time off over the winter, so part of the focus right now is rebuilding strength and consistency in this work.

The goal is keeping him in front of the leg while maintaining balance, so he can push from behind instead of rushing forward.

He’s starting to understand the effort required, and these are getting more consistent each ride.

This is a normal part of the process… building strength so the transitions become more uphill and effortless over time. 🏇

“Sterling” is a class horse that will get you noticed in any ring. Tall, thick and drop dead gorgeous, you don’t find TBs built like this often.

Sterling has a strong dressage foundation with rated dressage miles and is currently qualified for USDF Regional Championships at Training Level. He is schooling 1st/2nd level dressage at home. He also competed in the 2023 TB Makeover finishing 8th of 82 horses in dressage.

He also has miles at local CT shows up to Starter and has schooled up to 2’6” at home. He is happiest when jumping and we think he will make a great hunter/jumper/eventing prospect! He has a green change that hes currently working on.

He loads, clips, cross ties, stands for grooming, farrier and bathing. He does tend to get thin soled and goes best with at least front shoes here in Kentucky.

Sterling is not for beginners but would do great with a confident amateur in a consistent program to keep building on his confidence. He retired from the track in 2022 with a fractured splint in his left front which is fully healed and not anticipated to limit him.

Kai had a successful weekend at Indiana Dressage Festival debuting at First Level and earning respectable scores of 63.3% and 61.8% for his first attempts. He also earned two more Training Level scores to count toward USDF All Breeds Awards this year. I’m continually impressed by this horse’s natural abilities! 🐎
