Leptospirosis: a risk every pet owner should know about. 🐾

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can affect dogs and may cause serious illness, including damage to the kidneys and liver. It can be spread through contact with contaminated water or soil, as well as urine from infected animals.

And exposure isn’t limited to dogs who spend lots of time outdoors. Even dogs who mostly stay close to home or live in a city can be exposed.

Signs of leptospirosis can vary, but may include:
🐾 Fever or lethargy
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐾 Increased thirst or urination
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Jaundice (yellowing of the skin, gums, or whites of the eyes)
🐾 Muscle pain or weakness

The good news? Leptospirosis can often be prevented with vaccination. Talk with your veterinarian about whether the leptospirosis vaccine is appropriate for your dog.

If your dog is showing signs of illness or you’re concerned about a possible exposure, contact your veterinarian promptly.

This brave girl recently completed her second round of chemotherapy for lymphoma, and she continues to face every step of her journey with so much joy, strength, and resilience. 💙

We’re so proud of Maisy and her incredible spirit! A huge thank you to Dr. Bailey and our Oncology team for providing her with such compassionate care and supporting Maisy and her family throughout her treatment.

What does “board-certified” really mean — and how can it benefit your pet? 🐾

Veterinary medicine has specialties, just like human medicine. A board-certified veterinarian has completed advanced training in a specific area of veterinary medicine and met rigorous certification requirements established by their specialty college.

Becoming a specialist takes years of dedication. After veterinary school, most specialists complete a rigorous internship and multi-year residency focused on their specialty. This includes extensive clinical training, advanced case experience, and often research. They must also pass comprehensive specialty examinations and continue their education to maintain their expertise.

Join Us in Welcoming Dr. Chloe Baker! 🐾

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Chloe Baker to the Oradell Animal Hospital team as our newest Emergency and Critical Care veterinarian!

Dr. Baker earned her DVM from The Ohio State University and completed both a rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and a specialty internship in Emergency and Critical Care at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.

Her clinical interests include shock, fluid resuscitation, transfusion medicine, coagulopathies, and non-invasive oxygen therapy. She is also passionate about clear communication and helping families understand their pet’s condition and care.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Baker enjoys cooking, reading, spending time by the ocean, and spending time with her four dogs, Holly, George, Murray, and Todd. 🐶

We’re so happy to have Dr. Baker on the team! Please join us in giving her a warm Oradell welcome. 💙🐾

Duck Duck Update 🦆

We’re happy to share an update on Duck Duck, the Pekin duck who was previously seen at Oradell Animal Hospital for a fractured humerus.

Under the care of Dr. Caron, Duck Duck underwent a wing amputation after treatment options were discussed with her owners. She did very well through surgery, recovered uneventfully, and was able to return home the following day.

She even laid an egg the night after surgery—a pretty impressive recovery milestone! 🥚

Since returning home, Duck Duck has continued to heal well. She came in today for her final healing check, and we’re pleased to report that she is doing very well.

We’re grateful to have been part of Duck Duck’s care and are happy to see her continuing to thrive at home.
