A tired dog and a calm dog aren't the same thing.

Exercise is important, but it doesn't teach a dog how to settle.

Some dogs (especially depending on the breed!) need just as much practice doing nothing as they do learning commands.

A few things that can help:
Reward your dog when they choose to relax.
Practice settling on a bed or designated place.
Balance physical exercise with mental enrichment and downtime.
Give your dog opportunities to rest without constant stimulation.

Don't just tire your dog out until they can't misbehave, but teach them how to relax!

Some people need to learn this too 😜

Sometimes your dog's biggest struggle isn't knowing commands. It's being able to follow them when life is happening around them.

We've talked a lot about distractions lately, but what actually counts as a distraction?

More than you might think! Things we barely notice can be a big deal to our dogs:

A car driving past
Someone walking across the street
A new smell in the grass
Kids playing nearby
Another dog barking in the distance
A shopping cart rolling by
A visitor walking through the door
Even just being somewhere unfamiliar

To us, it's a normal Tuesday. To your dog, it's a whole lot of information to process.

That's why training in different environments means starting somewhere your dog can focus, then introducing everyday distractions as they get more comfortable!

This is going to help your dog learn how to respond even when they're there.

Just because your dog knows "sit" in the living room doesn't mean they can do it when a squirrel runs by. 🐿️

Dogs don't automatically apply what they've learned to every situation. Add distractions, excitement, or stress, and commands can become difficult.

That's why training shouldn't stop once your dog learns a command at home! They need opportunities to practice in different environments, but the key is gradually building up to more challenging situations, not expecting it immediately.

If your dog is struggling, make the task easier before assuming they're being stubborn, even though sometimes they totally are.😜

Door manners can be tough because visitors bring a lot of excitement. Practicing a designated place and rewarding calm behavior before guests arrive can make a big difference.

And no, your dog doesn't actually need to be the first one to answer the door.🐾

The first thing we work on in Board & Train isn't actually training at all.

It's building a relationship with them.

Before we start asking a dog to learn new things, we give them time to settle in, get comfortable with us, and adjust to a new environment.

Training goes a lot smoother when there's trust and a good relationship to build on.

Socialization doesn't mean your dog needs to meet every dog they see. 🐾

In fact, learning to be around other dogs without interacting with them is an important skill.

A well-socialized dog isn't necessarily the one who wants to say hi to everyone, it's one who can navigate different situations with confidence.

So, what can you do instead of encouraging every greeting?
🐾 Practice neutrality. Reward your dog for calmly observing other dogs without needing to approach them.
🐾 Keep a comfortable distance. If your dog is barking, lunging, or struggling to focus, create more space rather than forcing an interaction.
🐾 Make experiences positive. Introduce new environments and distractions gradually, at a pace your dog can handle.
🐾 Be selective with greetings. Not every dog wants to say hello, and that's perfectly okay.

The goal of socialization is to help them feel comfortable and confident!

Your dog isn't born knowing how to walk on a leash. And sometimes, the habits we think are helping are actually making walks harder.

Here are 3 common mistakes we see:
1. Letting pulling get them where they want to go.
2. Starting with too many distractions
3. Expecting a longer walk to fix it.

The goal isn't a dog that never stops to sniff or explore. It's a dog that can enjoy the walk without dragging you along for it.

Unpopular opinion: most dogs don't need a dog park. 🤷‍♂️

Unstructured play with dogs they don't know, and no rules can end up causing issues or situations you don't want to be in.

When a dog does not respond, it is easy to repeat the command louder.
Then louder again.
Then maybe even louder and more stern because they've still decided you're not worth their time. 🤣

Volume may get your dog's attention, but it does not automatically create understanding.
A useful command has been clearly taught, practiced in different environments, reinforced consistently, and followed through on when the dog becomes distracted.

That is why a dog may listen perfectly in the kitchen but appear to forget everything outside. (not to mention that's where treats come from)

The answer is usually better practice, clearer communication, and gradually working around more distractions, but give us a call and we can help troubleshoot!
