Ever wonder why the top lip of a sheep looks split?

It’s natural! 🐑

The division is done to help with their eating,
- Allows for close grazing and consumption of the shorter grass
- Helps them pick the preferred plant

Sheep are selective grazers and the split helps them eat what they need/want! 🐏

Fun Fact Friday!

Do you ever wonder about cattle and their stomachs? Did you know they actually have 4 compartments to their stomach?

🐮 The 4 compartments are the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and the abomasum

🐮 Along with their unique stomachs, they have unique problems that may arise
- Hardware Disease — exactly what it sounds like. Occurs when cattle swallow a piece of metal like wire or a screw, the metal settles in the reticulum and ends up puncturing through.
- Other common issues: Bloat, rumen acidosis, displaced abdomen, and more

Cattle health is largely dependent on their nutrition. Routine vaccinations, the proper composition in the feed, and maintaining a clean facility will all help ensure maximum productivity for your farm. 🐄

Today we are celebrating Silas on his last day here at Orange County Animal Clinic. Silas started working here in 2021 when he was 15 years old and it didn’t take long for him to work his way up to everyone’s go-to guy!

For his next adventure, Silas is joining the Army. We are beyond proud of him and we know he will accomplish great things!

Silas, we have loved working with you. Though we will miss you, we cannot wait to hear all about your journey! Good luck, we will be praying for and cheering you on from afar!

We are taking a trip down memory lane by celebrating two more staff milestones today! Ellie and Emma have a combined 11 years here at OCAC (7 years for Ellie & 4 years for Emma).

They both have the same memory to look back on over the years. They successfully performed a blood transfusion on a goat together!!
(How cool are they?!)

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know horses need Dentals too?! 🐴

🦷 The term for a horse dental is called “Floating”
- A veterinarian files down places where the teeth have become uneven. The goal is to create a more even chewing surface.

🦷 Why is this important?
- Horse teeth wear unevenly causing sharp points to form on both top and bottom teeth.
- Unlike humans, horse teeth will continue to erupt gradually over their lifetime. Sometimes eruption isn’t always even which can also cause an uneven surface.
- If the teeth do not align properly it poses health issues and appetite problems.

🦷 How often do horses need their teeth floated?
- This is dependent on many factors like age of the horse. Most adult horses need a dental exam and float at least once a year.

Just like our household pets, the health of the horses teeth is a large factor in their overall well-being!

‼️Bobcat Fever‼️

Our clinic has encountered 3 new cases of Bobcat Fever in the last week. This disease is transmitted by infected ticks biting domestic felines. If contracted, this disease is extremely fatal. In order to keep your household cats safe, we strongly recommend using flea/tick prevention regularly!!

Feline preventions available in our clinic:
- Revolution Plus: a monthly topical prevention for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and intestinal worms. Revolution Plus is dependent on weight of each individual cat.
- Credelio Cat: a prevention for fleas and ticks in tablet form. Credelio Cat is also dependent on weight of each individual cat. These tablets are to be given with food.
- Seresto collar: a wearable collar that works to kill and repel fleas and ticks on contact.

You can also check out our online pharmacy to purchase other preventions that are not sold in the clinic. The online store also offers the convenience of selecting Autoship so you can get your pets monthly preventions shipped right to your front door each month!

This month, we are celebrating the big milestone of 5 years at the clinic for Karington and Toni!

To celebrate, we asked them both to share their favorite memory from the past 5 years.

Toni’s favorite memory: “Dr. Cooper moving my Jeep to the other side of the clinic so when I went out to leave, I couldn’t find it.”

Karington’s favorite memory: “When Penny brought a live mouse into the clinic and one of our clients (I won’t say who, but you know who you are🤪) tried to jump over the counter at the front desk.”

Happy 5 years Karington and Toni (who are actually aunt & niece!), we are so glad you are on our OCAC team! 🥳💚
