Ashley participated in Road to the Toad this year at the Overland Park Arboretum! Take a moment to vote for your favorite toads! Exhibition will be out until November. Toads are for sale at the gift shop as well though you can’t pick them up until after the exhibition concludes.

I painted quite a bit today but it’s in an awkward phase so here is the rest of my day!

It was 2020. The world was falling apart with the pandemic, and I was wondering what all the fear was about. Dying? Big deal. People die every day, and I was silently hoping I would be next. An early and untimely death felt like the most romantic ending to a tortured mind and soul.

A month later, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. A diagnosis isn’t a cure, and there is no actual cure for bipolar, but a diagnosis is a start, which is what I needed.

I was told I had to take a step back from my beloved career as a horse trainer and spend three months away from stress, pressure, and other people’s (including my own) expectations. I needed to “find out who I was and untangle my identity from my career.” No small task for even a mentally healthy person.

But I went to Hobby Lobby and bought the biggest canvas I could find. Dragging it down to my basement craft room, I had a vision for my masterpiece. I painted it in under three hours—the brushstrokes flowing as naturally as if I had been painting my whole life. Granted, I had a love for art and creating, but I hadn’t ever painted a subject this large, and the medium was new to me.

When I was done, I knew I had found the road that would eventually lead to my inner self. And while I’m still on that journey, creating art one piece at a time calms my mind and rekindles my soul.

I do have to add that years of therapy and medication have ultimately brought me to stability and higher functioning, but art brings me peace, and for that I’m forever grateful to those who encouraged me along the way.
