If you’re wondering why the gnats are so bad in Florida right now, blame all this rain!

After weeks of wet weather, every puddle, ditch, low spot, and water trough becomes the perfect breeding ground for gnats and other biting insects. Warm temperatures combined with standing water create ideal conditions for their populations to explode almost overnight.

Unfortunately, it’s not just an annoyance for us. These insects can stress our horses and livestock, causing them to stomp, swish their tails, pace fences, and spend more energy trying to escape bugs than grazing. The increased moisture also creates conditions that favor parasites and other pests.

As horse owners, now is a great time to:
✔️ Eliminate standing water when possible
✔️ Keep water troughs clean
✔️ Use fly predators, traps, and fly control products
✔️ Stay on top of deworming and vaccination schedules
✔️ Check horses daily for insect-related irritation

The good news is that once we get a stretch of drier weather, the gnat population will begin to decrease. Until then, we’re all sharing Florida with about a billion extra flying freeloaders!

Who’s getting attacked worse right now—the horses or the humans? 🦟😂

🐴⚠️ New World Screwworm: What Florida Horse and Livestock Owners Need to Know ⚠️🐄

The New World Screwworm is not just another fly. Its larvae (maggots) feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, entering through open wounds, navels of newborns, tick bites, cuts, surgical sites, and other injuries. If left untreated, infestations can become severe and even fatal. (FDACS)

The good news is that Florida currently has NO confirmed cases of New World Screwworm in animals within the state. Florida’s animal health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have acted aggressively to keep this devastating pest out of Florida. (FDACS)

The Florida Department of Agriculture, under Commissioner Wilton Simpson, has issued emergency rules restricting the importation of warm-blooded animals from high-risk and infested areas. Additional veterinary inspections, health certificates, and treatment requirements have been put in place to help prevent the spread into Florida. Recent detections in Texas and New Mexico have resulted in even stronger protections and movement restrictions. (FDACS)

As horse owners, livestock producers, and pet owners, we all play a role in protecting our animals:

✅ Check animals daily for wounds and signs of infection.
✅ Treat cuts, scrapes, and surgical sites promptly.
✅ Monitor wounds for unusual swelling, discharge, odor, or maggots.
✅ Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect a problem.
✅ Follow all animal movement and health certificate requirements.

Florida successfully eradicated screwworm decades ago, and state and federal agencies are working together to keep it that way. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and help protect Florida’s horses, livestock, pets, and wildlife. 🐴🇺🇸

She’s INSIDE scrubbing away like she’s preparing it for a five-star resort.

Meanwhile, Casey is standing on the outside staring at her with complete confusion.

You can almost hear him thinking:
“Ma’am… that’s my water bowl. Why are YOU in it?”

But there he stands, supervising every scrub brush stroke like he’s the county health inspector.

Just another normal day at the barn. 😂🐴💦

Big changes are coming for animal owners in Florida. Starting July 1, House Bill 89 gives clients the right to receive a written prescription and choose where they want to fill it instead of feeling limited to purchasing directly through their veterinary office. This law requires veterinarians to inform clients of their options and allows owners more freedom to shop around, compare pricing, and make the best financial decisions for their animals.

For many animal owners, especially those caring for multiple horses, livestock, or pets, this could mean more choices and potentially lower medication costs while still maintaining veterinary oversight.

Knowledge is power — and knowing your options matters. 🐴🐶🐱

Rabies isn’t something we talk about enough until it’s too late. In Florida, wildlife exposure is a real concern — raccoons, bats, foxes, and other animals can expose our horses, livestock, pets, and families. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. (Florida Department of Health)

Many people are surprised to learn that while Florida law specifically requires rabies vaccines for dogs, cats, and ferrets, veterinarians and state health officials strongly recommend rabies vaccination for horses too because they absolutely can contract rabies. (Florida Department of Health)

A horse doesn’t have to leave your property to be at risk. One bite from infected wildlife is all it takes.

Vaccines are cheaper than emergencies. Cheaper than quarantine. Cheaper than heartbreak.

Check your records. Call your vet. Protect your horses. ❤️🐴

If you know, you know… finding good hay in the Florida Panhandle has become almost as difficult as finding time to ride all the horses that need ridden. Between droughts, rain, shortages, rising costs, and hauling from who knows where, quality hay has become something horse owners stress about year after year.

For several years now, we’ve been incredibly blessed with some of the best hay coming from coast to coast. The kind you open and immediately know your horses are getting quality. The kind that keeps weight on, horses happy, and gives you one less thing to worry about.

We don’t take it for granted because we know how hard good hay is to find right now. Every load that we get reminds us just how fortunate we are.

Around here, hay isn’t just hay… it’s peace of mind. Thank you Quality Hay of Fountain, FL🌾🐴

The Panhandle of Florida went from praying for rain to wondering if we’ll ever dry out again 🌧️🐴

While we are all thankful to see pastures greening up after such a dry stretch, all this moisture brings more than mud. Warm temperatures + standing water + wet conditions = the perfect recipe for parasites, insects, and disease pressure to explode.

Now is the time to stay on top of your horse’s health. Keep up with deworming programs, monitor manure, reduce standing water when possible, and most importantly — make sure your horses are vaccinated. Mosquito populations explode after heavy rains and diseases don’t wait for convenient timing.

Rain makes the grass grow… but unfortunately it grows a whole lot of things we don’t want too. Stay ahead of it now so you’re not fighting problems later.

Florida horse people know… one minute we’re begging for rain and the next we’re feeding in knee deep mud 🤦‍♀️🐎
