If you’re wondering why the gnats are so bad in Florida right now, blame all this rain!
After weeks of wet weather, every puddle, ditch, low spot, and water trough becomes the perfect breeding ground for gnats and other biting insects. Warm temperatures combined with standing water create ideal conditions for their populations to explode almost overnight.
Unfortunately, it’s not just an annoyance for us. These insects can stress our horses and livestock, causing them to stomp, swish their tails, pace fences, and spend more energy trying to escape bugs than grazing. The increased moisture also creates conditions that favor parasites and other pests.
As horse owners, now is a great time to:
✔️ Eliminate standing water when possible
✔️ Keep water troughs clean
✔️ Use fly predators, traps, and fly control products
✔️ Stay on top of deworming and vaccination schedules
✔️ Check horses daily for insect-related irritation
The good news is that once we get a stretch of drier weather, the gnat population will begin to decrease. Until then, we’re all sharing Florida with about a billion extra flying freeloaders!
Who’s getting attacked worse right now—the horses or the humans? 🦟😂
