The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo A place to explore, discover, create, & play!
(570)

The Zoo is home to more than 50 species of animals—about 200 specimens in all—many of which are brought into classrooms as part of the Junior Museum & Zoo's science outreach program with local schools. We offer a menagerie of science programs for schools and community groups, as well as classes, summer camps, and birthday parties for families.

We’re proud to share that the Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo has been accepted as a participant in the Wildlife Confiscations Network! 🐾

Through this network, JMZ joins a group of trusted animal care facilities helping support wildlife impacted by illegal trafficking. When animals are confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade, the network helps connect them with safe, qualified care. ❤️‍🩹

This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to animal welfare, conservation, and helping protect wildlife beyond the Zoo. 🌿

Check out the new blog post on our website to learn more about the partnership!

It’s Miss Melody’s birthday! 🎂🦆

Melody is one of our Fulvous Whistling Ducks. The word fulvous references their reddish yellow feathers, and Melody’s name pays homage to her species’ distinct vocalization! They make a more musical, high-pitched whistle instead of a “quack”! 🎶🍁

When you visit our Zoo, you’ll probably find Melody with her buddy Symphony! The two ducks can be pretty elusive, but you might spot them playing around the Wildlife Circle.

In fact, on this day, Melody was so tucked away in the grass that only her signature sounds gave her away. 👂

Its National Zoo and Aquarium Month! 🐾🐟

As JMZ continues to grow as an institution, we recognize the important role we play as a zoo in the broader global conservation effort. Whether large or small, zoos often provide one of the public’s closest connections to wildlife, habitats, and the information needed to better understand and protect the natural world. 🌿🦩

Our resident animals are rescued pets and wildlife, or they were chosen for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Regional Collections Plan and Species Survival Programs. The special, accessible installations and open-air zoo provides an immersive and whimsical setting to learn about animal adaptations, habitats, wildlife conservation, and more!

🐝Be sure to tune in to our upcoming June events to participate in local conservation efforts and to learn more about wildlife:

Pollinator Workshop - Friday June 5th, 11:30 - 1:30 PM

Valgius is 30 years old and climbing as high as ever! 🌳

Physical therapy helps Val with the stiffness and slowing movements that can come with his advanced aged!

Most male ring-tailed lemurs live up to 25-30 years in human care. The stretches and exercises help keep him as limber and mobile as possible, and the workout snacks aren’t half bad either! 🍌🥝🍎

Pro-tip: If you’re looking for Val in his habitat… look high, not low🔝🐾
