Reposted from the Showman because the reality in showing animals is that anyone can win on any given day:

🗣️ “I’m working so hard, but I’m still not winning. What am I doing wrong?”

Maybe nothing.

That might be one of the hardest lessons in this industry: effort and outcome do not always arrive at the same time.

You can feed right. Buy the “right” one. Perfect your daily routine. Continue to take advice. Spend extra hours in the barn. You can do everything you know how to do, and still watch somebody else get their hand shaken.

Because here’s the humbling part: Everyone works hard.

You are not the only one getting up early. You are not the only one staying late. You are not the only one making sacrifices, spending money, missing important events, practicing showmanship, or wanting it so badly it hurts.

At a certain level, hard work isn’t what separates you. It’s what gets you there. Then some days, it really does come down to a look.

Who got the best looks at the right time. Whose animal fit that judge’s priorities the closest. Who got their animal closest to 12 o’clock. Who got the right class break.

A different judge, a different day, a slightly different look, and the outcome might change entirely. Call it timing. Call it circumstance. Call it luck.

Whatever you call it, you can’t control all of it. But what you can control is whether you’ve worked hard enough to be standing there when it finally falls your way.

See, hard work simply puts you where good luck can find you.

It doesn’t guarantee the outcome. It keeps putting you in position for the right judge, the right look, the right break, and the right day to eventually meet all the work you’ve already done.

So absolutely, evaluate yourself when you lose. Stay coachable. Find the holes. Get better. Just don’t let every loss convince you there must be something fundamentally wrong with what you’re doing.

Sometimes you need to get better. Sometimes someone else was simply better. And sometimes, when everyone in the ring has done the work, it’s just about whose day it is.

Hard work doesn’t make you entitled to the outcome, it prepares you for when the opportunity finally arrives.

I had a fun day at Frankfort KY! I ventured out alone since Graham had a football game and Grace had a cheer competition. Luckily, I had plenty of help from my BGNDC friends!

I was fortunate to win BOB with my very young Otter Sr Buck OHF Wh***ey Glasses in Open B! “Rip” is very special - he is one of the best young otter bucks I’ve made, and I’m so exited about him! I was also lucky enough to win BOSB in Open C with my Chestnut Senior Buck OHF Google Me. “Cig” is another young buck I’m super excited about. He has some big shoes to fill in that category but I think he’s up to the task.

Grace had a great day too, thanks to the help of Taylynn Hilbert. Grace was the consistent agouti group winner in all of today’s shows and was BOB in show B with her Otter Sr Buck OHF Bulletproof (“Cooper”)! Cooper went on to win a RIS for Grace in Show B.

Congratulations to all the other winners today - in particular Cathy Young-Hilbert with her BOBs with OHF Heart Like A Trailer Park, Otter Sr Doe and OHF WhereTheWildThingsAre, Otter Sr Buck!

Oak Hill Farm would like to thank all of the The Bluegrass Netherland Dwarf Club youth who submitted essays - it was a very, very difficult task to select winners from so many deserving essays. The future of our club and our hobby is bright!

The winners of the essay contest are:
Dakoda Michel and Sadie Spillman (Jennifer Spillman). Dakoda will be taking home GC OHF Wh***ey River (“Willie”) and Sadie will be taking home GC Garner’s Wyatt (“Wyatt”)!

Both of these young ladies wrote specifically about what they wanted to do to mentor and help other youth, which is a guiding principle we strive for at Oak Hill Farm. Helping each other improve helps us all improve and moves our hobby forward in a positive light.

Congratulations to these ladies!
