We had a blast at our annual site visit at Callaway Resort & Gardens! We examined all of their birds of prey (multiple species of owls and hawks), a rabbit, two box turtles, and a snake! It is such an honor to care for these special animals 🦉🦅🐰🐢🐍

🐰🥕 Hoppy International Rabbit Day! 🥕🐰

We’re celebrating some of our favorite fluffy, floppy-eared patients at Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital! 💕 Rabbits are actually the most common small mammal exotic patients we see and treat, and we love getting to care for these little guys!

A few things every bunny parent should know:

🌸 Spay & neuter your bunny! We generally recommend this around 6 months of age. Besides preventing unwanted litters, spaying is especially important for female rabbits because they have a significant risk of developing reproductive disease, including uterine cancer, as they get older.

🌿 Rabbits are NOT just tiny dogs with big ears! Their GI tract is incredibly specialized and designed to keep food moving continuously. That’s why unlimited grass hay is such an important part of their diet—and why a rabbit who suddenly stops eating or producing normal poops needs veterinary attention quickly!

🦷 Their teeth are constantly growing! A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing, so proper nutrition and regular dental checks are an important part of keeping those chompers healthy.

💚 And perhaps most importantly… rabbits are masters at hiding when something is wrong. Regular wellness exams can help us catch problems before your bunny is feeling really sick.

🦎✨ Small changes can make a BIG difference for reptiles!

Meet this sweet rescue leopard gecko who came to see Dr. Weston with a pretty serious eye problem. 👀

Unlike dogs and cats, reptiles can be incredibly sensitive to changes in their environment. Something as simple as an issue with temperature, humidity, diet, or overall husbandry can contribute to illness — and they don’t always show sickness in the ways we typically expect.

Instead, reptiles may present with things like:
👁️ Eye problems
👄 Mouth disease
🦎 Skin or scale changes
🍽️ Changes in appetite
💩 Digestive issues
…and sometimes very subtle changes in behavior.

For this little rescue, some adjustments to husbandry, along with supportive medications, made a huge difference in just ONE WEEK! 🥹 Swipe to see the before picture

This is one of the many reasons proper reptile husbandry is so important — and why routine veterinary care with a veterinarian experienced in exotic species can make such a difference.

🦎💚 Happy World Lizard Day! 💚🦎

Today we’re celebrating some of our amazing lizard patients and giving you a peek at what comprehensive exotic pet care looks like at Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital!

Lizards may be small, but their healthcare is anything but one-size-fits-all. During a physical exam, we take a close look at their overall health and husbandry, including species-specific temperature, humidity, lighting, diet, and habitat requirements. Because what’s ideal for a bearded dragon may be completely different for a crested gecko or an iguana!

❤️ Heart health: We use a specialized instrument called a Doppler to listen carefully to the heart and screen for abnormalities such as murmurs or arrhythmias.

🩻 Imaging: As pictured, we can perform X-rays and ultrasound to look beneath the scales and help detect disease that may not be visible from the outside.

🩸 Annual bloodwork: Routine bloodwork gives us valuable insight into what’s happening internally and can help us identify disease before your pet starts showing obvious signs of illness.

🌡️ Husbandry consultations: We discuss the unique environmental needs of each species because there is truly no one-size-fits-all approach to reptile care.

Our goal is to help your scaly family members live long, healthy lives by combining preventative medicine, advanced diagnostics, and species-specific care. 🦎💚
