🩺🦦 Did you know routine bloodwork is just as important for ferrets as it is for dogs and cats?

In this video, Dr. Schiavone is collecting a blood sample from one of our ferret patients. Because ferrets are naturally very active and wiggly, we use a small amount of gas anesthesia to help them stay completely still and stress-free during the procedure. Blood is collected from the cranial vena cava, a common and safe technique used in ferret medicine.

Many owners are surprised to learn that this procedure is not painful, and the ferret wakes up almost immediately after the sample is collected!

Routine bloodwork allows us to look beneath the surface and screen for illnesses before obvious symptoms develop. Ferrets are especially good at hiding signs of disease, so regular wellness testing can help us detect problems early, monitor overall health, and provide treatment when it can be most effective.

Preventive care isn’t just for when pets are sick—it’s one of the best tools we have to help them live longer, healthier lives. ❤️

🎉🐾 **What an incredible day celebrating 5 years of Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital!** 🐾🎉

Today we had the opportunity to celebrate this amazing milestone with the people who make Sweetwater so special—our clients, patients, staff, family, and friends.

From the bounce house and giant slide to snacks, prizes, and lots of wagging tails, the day was filled with fun, laughter, and community. We loved seeing familiar faces, meeting new friends, and celebrating alongside the pets and people who have trusted us with their care over the past five years.

To our clients: thank you for allowing us to be a part of your pets' lives. To our dedicated support staff and team members: thank you for your hard work, compassion, and commitment that make Sweetwater what it is every day.

We are so grateful for the support this community has shown us over the last five years, and we look forward to many more years of caring for the pets we love!

🐢 Maxine’s Glow-Up! 🐢

Maxine the tortoise recently came to see us because her beak and nails had become significantly overgrown, making it difficult for her to eat comfortably. After a sedated beak and nail trim, she’s already looking and feeling much better!

A tortoise’s beak never stops growing, much like our fingernails. In the wild, normal grazing and foraging behaviors help keep the beak naturally worn down. When husbandry isn’t quite right, beaks can become overgrown and interfere with eating, leading to weight loss and other health concerns.

A few key factors for healthy beak growth include:
🌱 A proper diet rich in appropriate grasses, weeds, and leafy greens
☀️ Access to quality UVB lighting to support overall health and normal bone growth
🏡 An appropriate environment that encourages natural grazing and activity
🪨 Natural surfaces and enrichment that help wear down nails and beaks over time

If you notice your tortoise having difficulty picking up food, dropping food while eating, or developing a noticeably long beak, it’s a good idea to have them evaluated by one of our exotic veterinarians.

🐦 Avian Husbandry Matters! 🐦

Proper nutrition, environment, and enrichment are essential for keeping our feathered friends healthy and thriving.

This sweet bird recently visited Dr. Weston for correction of a significant scissor beak, a condition that can be influenced by a variety of factors, including husbandry and nutrition. One common issue we see is a diet made up primarily of seeds. While many birds love seeds, they are high in fat and lack important nutrients such as Vitamin A, which can contribute to poor beak quality, beak overgrowth, and increase the risk of other health concerns including liver and heart disease.

Perch variety is also incredibly important! Birds should have access to perches of different diameters and textures to help promote healthy feet and natural beak wear.

The good news? With appropriate dietary changes, environmental improvements, and routine grooming, we can make a huge difference. This patient has already started their journey, and after a few more grooming sessions, we’ll have this baby looking and feeling much better!
