Can Dogs Eat Salmon? Ask Alaska.
Recently, Mountain Dog has received questions about whether salmon can be fed to dogs.
The answer is yes, when appropriately prepared and fed. Salmon is a valuable protein source with a long history in Alaska.
Alaska Native communities and mushers have fed salmon to working dogs for generations. Along the Yukon River, fish helped sustain dog teams that families relied on for transportation and work. Alaska Department of Fish and Game research documents salmon’s substantial role in that tradition.
Why salmon?
It brings together high-quality protein, naturally occurring omega-3 fats, and nutrients such as vitamin D and B12. That combination makes salmon a particularly useful ingredient in canine nutrition. Its protein contributes to maintaining body tissues, while omega-3s have recognized uses in skin, coat, and joint support.
Preparation still matters. Raw fish can carry hazards, and freeze-drying alone does not eliminate them. Good sourcing, appropriate processing, and proper feeding are essential. Treats and toppers should complement a balanced diet.
At Mountain Dog, our original Salmon Treats, Salmon Minis, and Salmon Topper contain one ingredient: 100% wild-caught Alaska salmon.
We built our business around an ingredient with real nutritional value and deep roots in Alaska’s working-dog history.
