It never ceases to amaze me how unbelievably rude people can be online.
You try to do something positive. You put yourself out there. You create something, help people, share what you know, give people an opportunity to learn—and God forbid you make a few dollars for your time and effort while you’re doing it.
Then along comes someone sitting comfortably behind a keyboard who knows absolutely NOTHING about you, your experience, your intentions, what you’ve accomplished, or what happens behind the scenes…
But somehow, within 30 seconds of reading a social media post, they’ve become an expert on YOU.
The confidence is truly impressive.
What happened to “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”?
Or hell, how about just KEEP SCROLLING?
Nobody is forcing you to participate.
Nobody is forcing you to pay.
Nobody is forcing you to agree.
And believe it or not, nobody requested your unsolicited evaluation from the Internet Department of Unqualified Opinions.
It takes guts to put yourself out there and actually DO something. It takes time, effort, money, planning, and a willingness to have people watch you while you’re doing it.
Sitting behind a screen criticizing someone who’s actually out there trying?
That’s the easy part.
And here’s my favorite: if you genuinely believe you can do it better…
PLEASE DO.
Put yourself out there. Organize it. Pay for it. Deal with the logistics. Teach it. Help people. Take the criticism. Build something of your own.
I’ll even cheer you on.
Because there’s plenty of room in this world for people who want to contribute.
What we don’t need more of are people standing on the sidelines throwing rocks at the ones who actually showed up.
We’re all on this planet for a ridiculously short amount of time.
Be helpful. Be encouraging. Be constructive. Be funny. Be weird. Be whatever.
Just don’t be an as***le.
And if that’s too much to ask…
