To start off the Labrador Retriever Club National Specialty, Kale passed a Junior Hunter bonus leg. 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Today, in very difficult weather (relentless rain and strong winds) he successfully carried out his volunteer duties as Working Certificate Test Dog/Pick Up Dog, and Junior Hunter Test Dog. Additionally, we practiced Rally exercises at the Hunt Test site (beautiful private training grounds💜💜).

My boy, Kale, earned his tenth RACH leg yesterday. Half way to his Rally Champion title!
We have acquired quite a few Non-Qualifying scores along the way. 😅
This is why I came up with the phrase, “NQ = Never Quit” 🧡💜

This is an interesting perspective and one many people expect from their dogs: If your dog is let loose in a room shouldn't it "recognize" you and approach you? Why, when there are other people and other things to inspect? Most likely, each of these dogs knew exactly who their handler was and would happily go directly to them if instructed.

The “after” video.
There is no before video….just an explanation of the dog’s behavior.
Owner installed new dog door (call it “doggie” door if you’d like - I’m just assuming we are all adults here). The previous dog door was larger and a single flap. This in-wall door has stiffer flaps with a small gap between. Owner made several attempts with a person and treats on each side of the door, trying to cheerlead the dog through.
The dog was distracted and/or confused by the humans and their entertaining antics and would not go through the door even when held open.
I started simply by putting the dog outside and coming back in without letting him follow me through the human door. After waiting several minutes, I went back outside and played a little bit with the dog then abruptly went back in. He kept nudging the dog door but did not use it. Within five minutes he pushed his way in. I spent the rest of the day occasionally taking him outside and not letting him use the human door to come back in. This morning, at first potty outing, I walked outside and left him inside. I calmly called his name and sprinkled some food on the deck. He kept testing the door from the inside and I remained quiet so he wouldn’t be distracted by “whatta good boy” or “good job.” I gave him time and patience to figure it out. This video was the second time I locked him in.

Sometimes training can be so very simple if we can give the time and patience that a dog needs. 🧡💜

If you start your dog training journey with a very strong foundation of communicating FAIRLY and CONSISTENTLY with your dog, the rest of it will be so much easier for both of you.

Examples:

Always (consistent) start your dog walk with a non-pulling dog. If your pulls, give the opportunity to go back inside the house/car (fair choice) and start over again.

Always (consistent) have your dog leashed when a visitor arrives. Hold your dog's leash so he can't reach visitor and give dog food reward if he returns to you (fair choice).

Always have a plan at feeding time (consistent). If your dog lunges toward food bowl, cover it quickly so he can't get to the food, uncover if he retreats and waits for permission (fair).

If your dog starts to jump in your lap without invitation, quickly stand up or use a pillow to divert him. Later, in fairness, when he is not demanding attention, invite him up for a visit.

ALWAYS have a plan with FAIR choices for the dog.

Hugs 🧡💜🧡💜
