As with many of the positive habits I stumbled into when 6 week old baby Mia came into my life, I started a routine where I made her do all of the commands I can think of to get a dental stick.

I cannot forget because she will not let me. Whatever time finish eating, Mia will politely sit in front of me and stare until I ask "is it time to do some tricks for a Greenie?"

Studies show that dogs with unpredictable routines that challenge their minds show a measurable decrease in cortisol levels. Having routines to rely on helps the dog develop predictable patterns in their brain and show less symptoms of separation anxiety and stress.

I have had the pleasure of extensive training by the extraordinary non-profit Dogs Playing for Life along with over 900 hours of experience as lead handler in playgroup. Thanks to my DPFL training and experience, I trust my tools and abilities to step in only once a fight has happened and favor a very hands-off approach.

By allowing the dogs to make their own decisions, they are better able to build confidence in themselves and their social abilities. A skill I hope translates to their conduct once they find their forever homes.

While Hazel didn’t get adopted from Saturdays outreach event at Good Times Dog Bar, he did get over his fear of other dogs.

I’m thrilled to show that confidence carried over and Hazel was able to graduate from ‘Gentle Dainty’ to ‘Push Pull’.
