A pre-purchase exam (PPE) isn’t simply about a horse “passing” or “failing.” Every horse and every buyer is different, which is why findings should be considered alongside the horse’s age, history and intended use. A PPE gives you valuable information about the horse’s current health and allows your veterinarian to identify findings that may be relevant to what you plan to do with that horse.

Going into a purchase with more information can help you make a more informed decision about your potential new partner.

My horse is eating normally. Do they still need a dental exam? Yes!

Horses can develop sharp enamel points, uneven tooth wear, and other dental issues without showing obvious signs of discomfort. In fact, many horses continue eating normally even when dental problems are present. Routine dental exams help catch potential issues early, before they begin affecting your horse’s comfort, health, or performance.

At Harbour Ridge Equine, we recommend having your horse’s teeth evaluated at least once a year, with some horses needing more frequent care depending on their age and dental health. 📞 561-744-9026

Your horse can’t always tell you when a tooth hurts but they may show you. Dropping feed, quidding hay, difficulty maintaining weight, resisting the bit, or changes in chewing can all be signs that it’s time to take a closer look. Routine dental examinations are an important part of your horse’s overall wellness plan, even when there aren’t obvious symptoms.

What’s "normal" for your horse? One of the most valuable things you can know is your horse’s "normal" or baseline.

Their temperature.
Their appetite.
Their manure.
Their water intake.
Their attitude.

Knowing your horse’s baseline makes it much easier to recognize when something has changed. This information can be incredibly helpful when you call your veterinarian. Especially in case of an emergency.

What to do before you buy a new horse: You’ve found the horse. You’re already picturing the rides, shows, and adventures ahead. Now it’s time for the Pre-Purchase Examination (PPE). A PPE helps give you a clearer picture of the horse’s health and soundness at that moment in time. The examination can also be tailored to the horse’s intended use, history, age, and your individual concerns.

A PPE isn’t about “passing” or “failing” a horse, it’s about helping you make an informed decision. We're here to help.

Senior horses can continue thriving for years with thoughtful, planned management and routine veterinary care. Regular exams and bloodwork help us monitor changes that may not be obvious from the outside. Weight changes, muscle loss, changes in drinking or urination, difficulty chewing, and decreased energy are all worth paying attention to. Let’s help those golden oldies feel their best.

Is your horse up to date on their West Nile vaccine? If you are unsure of their vaccination status, call our office at 561-744-9026. Our team can review their records and schedule any needed boosters.

Sentinel chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus, signaling mosquito-borne disease activity in the area. The virus can cause serious neurological illness in horses, but vaccination helps reduce the risk.

We recommend West Nile vaccination twice a year to help keep them protected.

Just like we go to the dentist for routine checkups, dental care is important for horses even when they aren’t showing any obvious issues.

Regular evaluations help identify sharp points, uneven wear, painful areas, and other concerns that can affect chewing, digestion, weight, comfort in the bridle, and performance, often before you notice a problem. Don’t wait for the signs. Make dental care part of your horse’s routine wellness.
