Blu wanted everyone to know that her favorite person said yes….

Some of you may have noticed a new face hanging around Salty Paws lately.

She deserves a proper introduction because she’s become such a huge part of everything I do. I’m so excited I get to now call her my fiancée.

Meet Mackenzie.

She’s kind, smart, beautiful, and loves a dog trainer and his dog. You’ll find her giving treats and belly rubs to not only Blu, but all of your dogs while they’re here.

On a side note swipe to the end to see Blu being Blu

These are videos I never thought I’d show anyone. I don’t have any from her crazy bad moments but these are from the early days of working/struggling through her reactivity.

Not because I’m ashamed of Blu… but because those years were HARD. Emotionally draining, embarrassing, and heartbreaking at times.

Blu lived in an apartment with me when she was younger, and looking back, it was basically a haunted house environment for a reactive dog. Off leash dogs everywhere, irresponsible college kids, tight spaces, unpredictable situations around every corner. We started training when she was only 9 weeks old, but sometimes no matter how hard you try, reactivity still happens.

Blu’s mental state slowly continued to escalate and as her anxiety got worse, so did mine as her owner.

Blu was everything to me. I dreamed of that fun dog lifestyle with beach days, restaurants, hiking, all of it. Eventually things got so hard that every walk was with anxiety. I was constantly scanning the environment trying to avoid situations that would push her over threshold. There were multiple moments where I completely broke down in tears. Two days still stick with me. One of them was at a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale with dogs constantly walking by. Blu completely lost it over and over again until we were asked to leave by the staff. I was defeated. Something had to change.

When Blu got frustrated enough, she would redirect onto me. It was harder than hard. To everyone watching, she probably looked aggressive and out of control.

That was years ago and long before I became a trainer.

The truth is… Blu and I both needed help.
Thankfully, from the day I brought her home, I had someone in my corner that I still consider one of the greatest trainers out there who didn’t give up on us (huge shoutout to Keely from Ruff Rules). There was tough love, hard conversations, and a lot of learning through the struggles. I had to completely change the way I approached things. Our relationship had to change. And together, we had to do a LOT of hard things to get through it and consistency mattered.

Dakota was here from New York and came in with an outstanding foundation but needed a lot of help getting through some bad anxiety, gaining off leash reliability and being able to just calm down and hold his commands. He has the dream owners who travel with him and take him everywhere, so his training is going to give him the final step in his amazing life of adventure.

He was the first Stabhoun I’ve worked with and I’m hoping he won’t be the last because it’s an amazing breed. I genuinely fell in love with this boy and loved being a part of his training formation

Happy 5th birthday Blu, the one who started it all 💙

When I got you, I had no idea how much you were about to change my life. You tested me, humbled me, and forced me to step up.

This past year with you has been quite the adventure. We bought a house. We grew the business. We started board and trains. And then we almost lost you to bloat. Watching you fight through that and seeing you fully recovered now, running around like nothing ever happened is something I’ll never take for granted. You love with everything in you and you play even harder.

Thank you for fighting so hard to stay by my side. You’ll always be my feisty sidekick, my business partner, and also my medical miracle. You’re the reason I get to help other dogs and their owners every day.

Five years down and a lot more to go. I love you even more than you love pup cups and your favorite blue ball. 💙

I’ve been so excited to announce this…

Salty Paws Dog Training was chosen as Florida Panthers Small Business of the Month and I’m honestly just so honored and grateful. This is such an amazing privilege to me.

If you’ve ever watched my stories, you already know that every single dog in training is on “place” watching hockey with me.
We don’t miss games in this house. Every dog has basically become a Cats fan whether they signed up for it or not.

This business started as a dream and turned into my whole life. Long days, late nights, training sessions, setbacks, wins, and everything in between… it’s all been worth it. I love what I do and In the end, it’s all about helping dogs and giving them and their owners the best lives together.

I’ll be at the home games all February, and I’m excited to meet you guys, talk hockey, talk dogs, and show Panthers fans how you can cheer on the Cats while having a well-trained dog at home.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported me, trusted me with their dogs, shared my stuff, and believed in Salty Paws. The people and dogs behind Salty Paws are my MVP’s.

Let’s go Cats. Let’s go Salty Paws.
See you at the games!

Today marks 3 months since Blu came out of emergency bloat surgery 🤍
She’s fully back to herself, happy, strong, and thriving. And while she’s moved on like nothing ever happened, I’d be lying if I said I don’t still think about what she went through.

What saved Blu’s life was awareness. I’ve always been very educated on the signs and symptoms of bloat, and I’m incredibly in tune with her. The moment something felt off, I knew she was in trouble.

In Blu’s case, it wasn’t food-related. We had just gotten home, she drank water, jumped onto the couch and within 10 minutes, the signs were obvious.
She wasn’t breathing normally, was trying to vomit but couldn’t, and was unable to lay down.
She was at the emergency hospital within 20 minutes, and the vet told us it was caught incredibly fast.

Some dogs show subtle signs that progress over time. Others like Blu decline rapidly. There is no “wait and see” with bloat.

I’ve taken every precaution with her, including attempting a preventative gastropexy when she was a puppy, but complications made that impossible. Even with all the knowledge and preparation, bloat can still happen which is why education and speed matter so much.

If you have a deep-chested dog, please:
• Learn the signs of bloat
• Know how to reduce risk where possible
• Always have a plan for where you’ll go in an emergency

And if you are ever questioning whether you should go to the emergency vet—the answer is always yes.

If sharing Blu’s story helps save even one dog, it’s worth telling every time.
