Brevard Spay/Neuter Clinic (previously Brevard Community Animal Hospital) was started in 2007 by Dr. Connie Mengering. She is a veterinarian and was the owner of a full-service veterinary clinic in Melbourne for 25 years. Although she worked with a few non-profit animal groups during that time to provide lower-cost veterinary care, it was not until she sold her practice and retired that she began

to realize how much more commitment to the area of low-cost spays and neuters was desperately needed. In 2007, Brevard Community Animal Hospital (now Brevard Spay/Neuter Clinic) partnered with Animal Guardians of Brevard, one of the first non-profit groups in Brevard to provide financial assistance to qualifying pet owners in Brevard County to get their pets sterilized. Over the years the clinic has been able to offer these services to other committed groups (PURRS, Last Chance Sanctuary, Snip-A-Pit, Helping Overpopulation of Pets End (HOPE), Space Coast Feline Network, RSL Haven, and The Daphne Foundation.) In 2012, Brevard Community Animal Hospital moved to its new location in Malabar and became Brevard Spay/Neuter Clinic. This change was made in order to provide a greater number of spay and neuter surgeries and to be more accessible to the public as well as to the non-profit animal groups. In 2016, we moved into our current building on Dixie highway (US1), which is three times the size of the previous Malabar location. In 2018, we officially became a 501c3 non-profit in order to be able to serve more of those in need. The main mission of Brevard Spay/Neuter Clinic is to be part of a larger campaign in Brevard County to address pet overpopulation concerns and provide lower-cost spays and neuters to pet owners and caretakers who cannot otherwise afford them. Our partnership with different non-profit groups also helps to get financial aid to qualifying pet families.

We wanted to thank the community that has reached out to us to make us aware of facebook post about someone's experience with our clinic. We are very sorry for the owner's loss. Our hearts hurt when any animal is lost, no matter the circumstances. There are risks anytime anesthesia is given to an animal, whether they are young, old, healthy, or have a pre-existing condition. We do recommend pre-anesthetic blood work to help detect anything going on internally, but it was declined that morning. Unfortunately, we suspect the kitty had a reaction to anesthesia as that is all that she had received while in our care. In her case, we were able to regain a heartbeat, but her neurological status was compromised. We tried to accommodate the owner in every way, including waiting for the owner to arrive and having them hold her. There was no cost to the owner besides the requested private cremation. We perform many life-saving surgeries on high-risk patients daily that would otherwise die without surgery (foreign bodies, blocked cats, pyometras, etc). Every day we strive to do the best we can for the community. Our hearts go out to the family.
