Over the weekend I was able to attend the annual Maine Association of Taxidermy show in Freeport. I decided to put together a bobcat this year and custom mold/cast an open snarling mouth for it. It is rewarding putting together a show piece, but also a large time commitment. Ken Walker of Alberta was the mammal judge this year and his knowledge base was incredible. Listening to his carcass casting seminar and all of his mammal critiques I learned a ton, including my bobcat critique. He awarded me a blue ribbon with a score of 96 and gave me a lot of inspiration for future mounts. Thank you to Sam, Jared, Candice, and all of the other MAT members that volunteer their time to make the show a success.

Andy Craig this is the 33lb tom that I purchased off you a couple of winters ago. Thank you for a nice specimen!

Stephen missed arrowing this coastal Island buck in full velvet by about 12 hours. These island deer are neat to put together. They’re quite a bit different than mainland deer. I call them pygmy deer because their bodies are usually so much smaller. This buck was 5.5 years old, but his nose length was only 6 3/4”. Generally our mainland deer would be 7 1/2”- 7 3/4” at that age. Luckily those island pygmy deer can grow some nice antlers though and when you get them early season like this, they sure do make a pretty mount! Congratulations Stephen on a great buck.

Logan filled his early season expanded archery tag, but also didn’t let his rifle tag go to waste! It’s not often I get a customer request ears forward in a full sneak pose, sometimes it’s nice to do something different for a change. Congratulations Logan on a great season!

If you’re an archery hunter in Maine, you’re pretty lucky you can put an expanded tag on a buck like this and then still have a rifle tag in November. Congratulations Logan on a great early season Archery buck!

Early season expanded zone bucks are a real pleasure to mount. I’m always partial to mounting big Western or Northern Maine deer, but these early season bucks sure do look pretty. Congratulations Justin on a stud expanded archery buck!

Chris needed a cape for this buck that he had left with a taxidermist in Vermont a few years ago. Unfortunately that taxidermist had health issues with cancer and was not able to complete the mount. Chris was able to get the rack back and I was able to get him a cape. Thank you Chris and congratulations on a great Vermont buck!

Quality taxidermy usually means not cutting corners. For the best results, this buck needed the head width narrowed a bit and also the nose lengthened just a bit.

Could I have thrown the skin on the form and mounted it as it originally was… probably. Would the customer noticed what was wrong… maybe, but probably not. Would I have made a little more money not altering it and mounting it as it was… yes, but I was taught a long time ago, if you’re going to do something you should do it right. Even if that means making a little less money.

This buck should mount up great now.

Heck of a nice 10pt Central Maine buck. Congratulations Justin. Form Mears Whitetail Forms NSSR 22

Brute of an early season archery buck. This buck dressed 216lbs. It’s rare for me to get an early season deer that fits a 23” form, but this big guy fit easily. Congrats Justin.
