🍰🐾 **Happy National Dessert Day from JAM Veterinary Services!** 💚

Want to include your pets in the celebration? Skip the sugary desserts and assemble a little treat just for them!

🐶 **For dogs: Pumpkin “pup parfait”**
Layer a small dab of **plain, unsweetened pumpkin purée** with a few pieces of your dog’s regular kibble. Use pure pumpkin—not pumpkin pie filling!

🐱 **For cats: A savory “kitty cupcake”**
Shape a small portion of your cat’s usual wet food into a little mound, then top it with a few tiny pieces of **fully cooked, unseasoned chicken**, with bones and skin removed. No baking required!

🐶🐱 **For either: Chicken confetti**
Sprinkle a few tiny pieces of plain, fully cooked chicken over a small portion of their regular food for a festive finish.

💡 **Keep the celebration small!** Treats should make up no more than **10% of daily calories**. Count any regular food used toward their usual meal allowance.

🚫 Leave out chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol, onions, garlic, added sugar, and seasonings.

If your pet has food allergies, a medical condition, or a prescription diet, check with your veterinarian before introducing new ingredients.

📸 Show us your pet enjoying their special treat—or tell us if you have a pet named Cookie, Brownie, or Cupcake! 🧁

❄️🐢 **Cold-weather reminder from JAM Veterinary Services!**

With this cold snap, please check on your outdoor reptiles—including desert tortoises and sulcatas. Their winter needs are different, and a safe setup is essential!

🏠 **For reptiles that need to stay warm:** Bring them into an appropriate indoor enclosure or provide a secure, properly heated shelter that maintains their species’ required temperatures—even overnight. A blanket or an unheated shed alone won’t provide the warmth they need.

🌡️ Check enclosure temperatures with reliable thermometers, use thermostatically controlled heating, and keep heating equipment safely positioned to prevent burns and fires. Indoor setups also need appropriate lighting, UVB, and humidity for the species.

🐢 **Sulcatas do NOT brumate.** They need appropriate warmth throughout the year. Don’t assume a cold, inactive sulcata is simply settling down for winter.

🍂 **Desert tortoises may brumate**, but this requires a planned, protected winter setup and an assessment of their health. Don’t let a sudden drop in temperature serve as their brumation plan! Ask your reptile veterinarian about preparation, safe shelter, temperature monitoring, and whether brumation is appropriate for your tortoise.

⚠️ Unusual weakness, nasal discharge, or difficulty breathing deserves veterinary attention—don’t dismiss these signs as normal winter slowing.

💚 Need help planning your reptile’s cold-weather care? **Call JAM Veterinary Services at 725-377-3534.**

Let’s keep our shelled and scaly companions safe this season! 🐢🦎

🌧️🐾 SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE, PAHRUMP! 🐾🌧️

As the remnants of Hurricane Rachel bring heavy rain and strong winds to Southern Nevada, JAM Veterinary Services wants to remind our community to keep their pets safe!

⚠️ FLASH FLOODING: Even light rain at home can mean dangerous flooding in nearby washes. Keep pets away from standing or moving floodwater.

🐇 Rabbit Diet Safety: What Should Rabbits Really Eat? The biggest myth? Rabbits live on carrots and pellets🥕❌ A healthy rabbit diet should be built around unlimited grass hay like Timothy, orchard, or oat hay. Hay keeps their digestive system moving and supports healthy teeth. Rabbit diet basics unlimited grass hay, daily leafy greens and herbs like romaine, cilantro, parsley, basil, and carrot tops, plain measured pellets, no colorful mixes, fresh water at all times, and tiny treats only. Small bits of carrot or fruit occasionally. 🚫 Avoid feeding bread, crackers, cereal, cookies, seeds, nuts, sugary snacks, moldy hay, or sudden diet changes. ⚠️ If your rabbit stops eating or stops producing p**p, call a veterinarian right away. It can become urgent quickly. Rabbit questions? Jam Veterinary Services is here to help. Save and share to help keep bunnies healthy.

🕷️🌵 It’s Tarantula Season in Pahrump! 🌵🕷️

Every fall, generally from late August through October, tarantulas become more visible here in the desert. If you’re noticing these large, fuzzy spiders out and about, don’t worry—it’s a normal part of the season!

🕷️ Why Are They “Migrating”?
They’re looking for a mate! After spending years living mostly in burrows, mature male tarantulas venture out in search of females. You may spot them crossing the desert, roads, and yards, especially during cooler evenings. What we call a migration is really their seasonal search for love!

📚 Tarantula Facts:

• Tarantulas may look intimidating, but they generally avoid confrontation.
• When threatened, they can flick tiny, barbed hairs from their abdomen. These hairs can irritate skin, eyes, and airways, making them an important risk to know about.
• They help control insect populations and play an important role in our desert ecosystem.
• Their journeys can be dangerous, with birds and tarantula hawk wasps among the predators they face.

🐾 Pet Safety Tip:
Keep curious dogs and cats from sniffing, chasing, or pawing at tarantulas. Their defensive hairs can cause serious eye injuries, so give them space and avoid handling them.

If your pet develops squinting, eye redness, or irritation after an encounter, contact us at JAM Veterinary Services. For breathing trouble, seek immediate veterinary care.
