Just hours away from being euthanized to make room for more dogs at the Baldwin shelter, Benito was given a second chance. Today, he is learning to fetch, play with other dogs, soak up hugs, and work hard at becoming a true gentleman. Benito is the embodiment of the loyal little companion — the kind of dog you’ll build memories with and talk about around the dinner table for years to come. One day he may move a little slower, but he will always remain faithfully by your side.

Benito loves people — big and small, young and old. He thrives on human connection and wants nothing more than to be part of a family. When it comes to other dogs, Benito is putting in the effort. He is making steady progress learning to stay calm and does well with balanced, easygoing dogs. With a little more time and maturity, Benito will grow into the perfect sidekick.

The steps in between a transition…

Everyone is always in transition. The scenery might change—a new job, a new school, a new baby, parents aging, reaching retirement, a new relationship, a new home, or a new pet—but that is all part of the journey. We cannot skip the uncomfortable parts of life; we can only try to understand them and embrace them as best we can.

When it comes to dogs, maturity isn’t achieved in a few months—it takes a few years. Don’t rush the process or give up when things get complicated. With effort and dedication, the results are often closer than they appear.
