🐴🍂 **COOLER WEATHER IS COMING — KNOW THE SIGNS OF COLIC!** 🍂🐴

As temperatures begin to drop, it’s a good time for horse owners to pay extra attention to their horse’s drinking, eating, and manure habits.

Cooler weather often brings changes in **water consumption, forage, turnout, and exercise**. Horses may drink less when the weather turns cold, and inadequate water intake can increase the risk of dehydration and **impaction colic**.

🚨 **KNOW THE SIGNS OF COLIC:**

• Pawing or repeatedly looking at the flank
• Lying down more than usual
• Repeatedly getting up and down
• Rolling or attempting to roll
• Kicking or biting at the belly
• Stretching out as if trying to urinate
• Decreased appetite or refusing feed
• Decreased manure production or small, dry manure
• Sweating without an obvious reason
• Abdominal bloating or distention
• Acting unusually quiet, uncomfortable, or restless

💧 **HELP REDUCE THE RISK:**

Make sure your horse always has access to **fresh, clean water**, and pay attention to how much they are actually drinking—especially after a sudden temperature change. Keep feeding and exercise routines as consistent as possible, provide adequate forage, encourage regular movement/turnout, and monitor manure production.

☎️ **WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL THE VET?**

**When in doubt, CALL.** Colic can range from mild discomfort to a life-threatening emergency, and it isn’t always possible to tell the difference just by looking at your horse.

Contact your vet promptly if your horse is showing persistent or severe pain, repeatedly rolling or going down, has stopped eating or passing manure, has abnormal vital signs, or simply isn’t acting right.

⚠️ **Banamine** Please do not give Banamine or other medications unless directed by your veterinarian. Medication can temporarily mask pain and make it more difficult to evaluate how the colic is progressing. Call your vet to discuss what you should do. NEVER repeat dosage if symptoms persist without vet approval.

🐴💨 HEAVES IN HORSES: WHAT EVERY HORSE OWNER SHOULD KNOW 💨🐴

Has your horse developed a chronic cough, difficulty breathing, or poor performance? They may be suffering from heaves, also known as equine asthma.

🔍 Common Signs of Heaves:
• Chronic coughing
• Nasal discharge
• Increased breathing effort, especially at rest
• Exercise intolerance
• Flaring nostrils
• A visible "heave line" along the abdomen from working harder to breathe
• Wheezing or abnormal lung sounds

🌾 Common Triggers:
• High temperatures & humidity
• Dusty hay
• Moldy hay or bedding
• Poor barn ventilation
• Dust from arenas and stalls
• Pollen and environmental allergens

💡 Management Tips:
✅ Improve ventilation in barns.
✅ Feed dust-free or soaked hay when recommended.
✅ Reduce exposure to dust and mold.
✅ Increase turnout time when possible.
✅ Work closely with your veterinarian on treatment options.

⚠️ Heaves is a chronic condition, but with proper management many horses can remain comfortable and active.

🔥☀️ KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STRESS IN ANIMALS ☀️🔥

As temperatures climb, our pets and livestock are at greater risk for heat stress and heat stroke. Knowing the warning signs could save a life!

🐾 Common Signs of Heat Stress in Dogs & Cats:
• Excessive panting
• Excessive drooling
• Bright red or pale gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Rapid heart rate
• Difficulty breathing
• Stumbling or disorientation
• Collapse or seizures

🐴 Common Signs of Heat Stress in Horses & Livestock:
• Heavy or rapid breathing
• Excessive sweating (or no sweating in horses that are working)
• Elevated body temperature
• Increased heart rate
• Weakness or reluctance to move
• Decreased appetite
• Dehydration
• Staggering or uncoordinated movement
• Collapse

💧 What to Do:
✅ Move the animal to a shaded or cool area immediately.
✅ Offer cool (not ice-cold) water.
✅ Use fans if available.
✅ Wet the body with cool water, focusing on the legs, feet, and underside.
✅ Contact your veterinarian right away if symptoms are severe or not improving.

⚠️ Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can become life-threatening very quickly.

Remember: If it's too hot for you, it's probably too hot for your animals too! Make sure they always have access to fresh water, shade, and a place to cool down.

🐴🐐🐄 Safe people foods for LIVESTOCK ANIMALS 🐄🐐🐴

Many livestock animals enjoy an occasional healthy treat, but not all human foods are safe. Here are some favorites that can be offered in moderation:

🍎 Apples (remove seeds)
A favorite treat for horses, goats, sheep, and many farm animals.

🥕 Carrots
Crunchy, nutritious, and loved by horses, goats, donkeys, and rabbits.

🍉 Watermelon (flesh only)
A refreshing summer snack for many livestock animals. Remove the rind if your animal tends to gulp large pieces.

🍌 Bananas
Goats, pigs, and some horses enjoy bananas as an occasional treat.

🎃 Pumpkin
Pumpkin flesh is a healthy seasonal treat enjoyed by many farm animals.

🥒 Cucumbers
A cool, hydrating snack during hot weather.

🥬 Leafy Greens
Romaine lettuce, kale, collard greens, and other leafy vegetables can be offered in moderation.

🫛 Green Beans & Peas
Many goats, pigs, and poultry enjoy these fresh garden treats.

🍓 Berries
Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries make excellent occasional treats.

⚠️ Remember:
• Treats should make up only a small portion of the diet.
• Always introduce new foods gradually.
• Ensure fresh, clean water is available at all times.
• Different species have different dietary needs, so when in doubt, ask your veterinarian.

*Another tip is to offer smaller cut up pieces for less of a chocking hazard.

🚫 Avoid feeding:
• Chocolate
• Onions and garlic
• Avocado
• Moldy fruits or vegetables
• Excessive bread, chips, candy, or processed foods
• Dog or cat food to livestock
