Your pet’s routine tells us what “normal” looked like before something changed.

A dog pausing before the stairs. A cat visiting the water bowl more frequently. A pet sleeping in an unusual place or becoming less interested in their usual walk.

None of these observations gives us a diagnosis on its own. But together, they can help connect what we find during the examination with what has been happening at home.

When something feels different, tell us. Even the details that seem small may add important context to the case.

More testing does not automatically create more clarity.

Every diagnostic should have a purpose. Are we ruling out an obstruction? Looking for organ involvement?
Determining whether a patient can recover safely at home or needs to be hospitalized?

Sometimes the next answer comes from bloodwork.
Sometimes it comes from imaging. Sometimes history and physical examination tell us that careful monitoring is the right next step.

The goal is not to collect information. It is to use the right information to make a more informed decision for the patient in front of us.

An ear infection that keeps returning is no longer only a treatment question.

Floppy ears may raise the risk, but they do not explain every recurrence. When an ear becomes painful, itchy, or infected again, we ask what is keeping it inflamed.

Allergies, resistant bacteria, a mass, or middle-ear disease can all change the treatment plan. Treating the current infection matters, but so does identifying what keeps making the ear vulnerable to another one.

At McQueen, we look beyond the flare and take the time to understand what your dog’s ears have been trying to tell us.

We do not automatically treat a mass as malignant, and we do not dismiss it as benign without investigating it either.

Cytology gives us more information before deciding what comes next. It can help guide whether surgery is needed, the margins we plan for, and whether additional treatment or medication should be considered.

The more we understand, the more thoughtfully we can plan. Our patients deserve decisions based on evidence, not assumptions.

We can usually tell the season by the cases walking through our doors.

As summer continues in North Mississippi, skin allergies begin flaring in dogs and cats, sometimes in pets that have never shown signs before. Ear infections also become more common, but the ear is not always the original problem. Allergic inflammation changes the ear canal and creates the conditions for bacteria and yeast to overgrow.

Then there is one of the less expected seasonal patterns: ruptured ACLs.

Dogs are spending more time outside, running and using their legs. That activity does not cause a healthy ligament to suddenly fail. In dogs, the ACL typically weakens gradually because of an underlying degenerative condition. Increased activity may simply be what finally causes the damaged ligament to tear.

The injury can appear sudden, even when the process behind it was not.

Little Puppy Lear’s family continued pursuing every available option.

Frances's owner delayed her move to California until Frances could be evaluated at McQueen.

Jack reinforced something we believe strongly: age may increase the likelihood of disease, but it does not explain symptoms.

Different patients. Different circumstances. The same reason we still talk about them: each case changed the questions we ask in the next one.

At McQueen, experience should not make you quicker to assume. It should make you better at recognizing what deserves another look.

Every time Jaxon opened his mouth, he was putting pressure on an abscess behind his eye.

He had been in pain for weeks and was becoming hesitant to eat because he had learned that opening his mouth would hurt. A sedated oral exam revealed a small draining tract behind his last molar and a retrobulbar abscess, an infection in the space behind the eye and above the molar roots.

When we explored the tiny opening, infectious material began draining immediately. We widened the tract, thoroughly flushed the area and sent Jaxon home with antibiotics and pain medication. He felt better almost immediately and has continued to do well.

The important distinction in Jaxon’s case is that antibiotics were part of the treatment, but they were not the entire treatment. The infected pocket had to be opened, drained and flushed.

The difference was not a stronger medication. It was finding the source of his pain and treating it directly.

Some of our favorite Oxford plans are the ones where your dog never has to be left out.

Coffee from Caffecitos Espresso’s outdoor truck. A leashed walk around the lake and gardens at Pat Lamar Park. An outdoor table at Heartbreak Coffee. A few miles together on Whirlpool Trails.

Each place offers something different, but they all reflect one of the things we love most about Oxford: local businesses and community spaces that understand dogs are part of the family and often part of the plan.

These are a few of McQueen’s favorite dog-friendly places and one more reason we are proud to call Oxford home.

Not every explanation is a diagnosis. And not every treatment addresses why the symptom is happening.

When considering a new veterinarian, pay attention to what happens when the first answer does not fully explain what you are seeing. Are recurring symptoms normalized? Does the conversation end with a familiar label? Or does your veterinarian continue asking questions, investigating and adjusting the plan when needed?

These red flags are not about expecting an immediate answer to every difficult case. They are about recognizing when an explanation has stopped the investigation too soon.

If a symptom continues, returns or begins affecting your pet’s quality of life, the conversation should keep going.

A red flag does not mean the answer will be simple. It means the conversation should not stop there.
