The Pool Noodle Squeeze

It might look like a colorful car wash, but the pool noodle squeeze is a fantastic training tool!

Why we use it:
As prey animals, a horse’s natural instinct tells them to avoid tight spaces and to panic if they ever feel trapped. This obstacle teaches them that passing through a narrow gap is no big deal! The pool noodles brushing down their sides and legs teaches them to tolerate random touches on both sides of their body at once without feeling trapped.

A real-life scenario it prepares for:
A kid walks a horse a bit too close to the arena gate and they bump into it. Instead of panicking and jumping forward, they stay calm and continue on like nothing happened.

Who do you think has more fun with the pool noodles - the horses or the kids?

Want to know the secret to having super safe horses?

Obstacles!

Let’s be real - we can’t create every possible scenario to prepare our horses for life in a human world. As prey animals, they look at the world completely differently than we do. The everyday objects and actions we consider "no big deal" can feel HUGE to a horse!

This is where obstacle training comes in! By teaching a horse to think their way through various obstacles, we are creating an animal who can think through scary situations! It doesn’t mean they never get scared, but it means they have the tools they need to think it through instead of reacting blindly on instinct.

That way, when a kid runs up wearing a hoodie over their shoulders like Batman, the horse thinks: “Huh, interesting... this must be one of those days where we work on relaxation.” Rather than: “Yikes! A monster! Everybody run for the hills!”

As we work our way through Obstacle October, we will be introducing our favorite obstacles, explaining why we use them, and showing exactly how they prepare a horse for real-life scenarios. So, stay tuned!

Our students turned into detectives this week! To solve our big mystery, everyone had to complete various challenges and tasks to earn top-secret clues.

Their mission? Figure out exactly which Hoofbeats in Harmony horse was the secret culprit!

They worked hard to collect clues and figure out the answer. Some of the tasks included - putting a bridle together, tying various knots, sorting horse colors, standing in the stirrups for a full lap, lunging a horse and more.

(If you haven't solved the mystery in your class yet, don't worry. You will still get to do it!)

What does it mean when a rider is “on the correct diagonal”?

When a rider is riding a posting trot, they should stand and sit in time with the horse’s inside hind leg and outside front leg (see video for an example). This helps the rider stay in balance with the horse as he moves around the arena.

For a young rider, learning this skill takes some serious effort! It might sound easy, but it requires a high degree of:

Proprioception – knowing what their body is doing without looking down

Timing & Focus – feeling and following the horse’s rhythm instead of rushing or falling behind

Patience – a willingness to get it wrong 5+ times in a row, laugh it off, and try again

When our riders master the posting trot, they aren’t just improving their riding, they are proving to themselves that they can master hard things!

What is a hard thing your child has successfully mastered recently (at the barn or at home/school)? Let us know in the comments so we can cheer them on!

From mastering new skills in the arena to making unforgettable memories with their favorite horses, our riders absolutely crushed it this summer. I can't wait to see what they accomplish as we move into my favorite riding season of the year - fall!

What was your favorite part of summer riding? Let us know in the comments!

One of my favorite things to see in new students is the moment they take on the role of leader and start leading their horse to and from the arena with confidence. In the first lesson, most students are a bit timid on the walk from the barn to the arena. They tend to walk backwards looking at the horse, have trouble walking in a straight line, or even veer off course and end up going where the horse wants to go (juicy grass in the ditch). But by the end of the first month, this all changes. They start walking with their head up, eyes forward and their body language shows their newfound self-confidence. The change in how the horses respond is beautiful to see. The same horse that was distracted and trying to steal a snack is now calm and connected following their young rider wherever they are going.

This newfound confidence doesn’t stay at the barn. It carries right over into their everyday lives. When a child learns that they are more than capable of effectively communicating with a 1,000lb+ animal, the challenges at home and at school suddenly feel much more manageable. Parents often notice their child walking taller and speaking more confidently after working with horses. Something as simple as learning to lead a horse from the barn to the arena can teach kids that they are far more capable than they ever realized.

Very scary! So many horses (and apparently pigs and goats too) go unvaccinated for rabies. Unlike cats and dogs, the state does not require horses to be vaccinated so it is up to the individual owner to do the responsible thing and request the vaccine. Always, always ask before interacting or letting your child interact with someone's animal.

All of our horses (and other animals) here at Hoofbeats in Harmony are kept up to date on their rabies vaccine (thanks to our amazing vet Heart Horse Mobile Veterinary Services) so you can rest assured your child is safe interacting with them.

A very important PSA before the week starts- 4 goats owned by a petting zoo in NC have tested positive for rabies. A lot of people get a little lax about keeping their horses, goats, and pigs up to date on rabies.... thinking exposure risk is low and it's not "required" according to the state. We recommend annual rabies vaccination for our patients- please get them up to date if they are not! Parents out there- ask for proof of rabies vaccination of all animals prior to booking a mobile petting zoo or a pony party.

😂 that is some dedication right there. Apparently he couldn't wait until the end of his bath to get a bite of grass.
