LET’S START THEM YOUNG — AND KEEP THEM ON A SCHEDULE- BECAUSE YOUR PET DESERVES NOTHING BUT THE BEST! 🤍
One of the BEST things you can do for your puppy is introduce them to professional grooming early on— before they ever have the chance to decide that grooming is scary- because let’s be honest, it is to a young pup! Those Loises- what the heck are those?! Let’s prevent that going into adulthood! 🤍
I like puppies to start coming to the salon as soon as they’ve received 2 full rounds of their puppy vaccines, including the Bordetella vaccine, and from there, I prefer to keep them on a consistent 4–5 week grooming schedule for their entire first year of life. Now, I know this seems like alot. But, hear me out…..
As both a professional groomer and a reputable breeder, I get to see the difference this makes from BOTH sides — and it is HUGE. 🤍
That first year isn’t just about keeping your puppy clean and cute. Sure, that’s a bonus! But, It’s about training them for a lifetime of grooming and ensuring they’re fear free, calm, happy, comfortable, and most of all they are SAFE.
Regular puppy appointments teach them that it’s normal to have:
• Their feet and nails handled
• Their face, ears and mouth touched
• Clippers around their head and on their body
•Water isn’t scary, it can be fun
• A dryer blowing on them
• Brushes and combs through their coat
• Their body positioned and handled safely
• A stranger working with them away from their family (this is also a GREAT way to encourage confidence and help with separation anxiety they may have with their family leaving them)
When we start young and stay consistent, we’re building confidence, trust and familiarity.
Dog’s do best when there is a routine.
It makes sense- they know what time we feed them (well not really, they can’t tell time 🤣) and what time we should be home. So, knowing what grabbing a leash and car keys means, that’s important! Not just for a pup cup ride- but a common phrase my clients say “Let’s go see Morgan!”
Instead of waiting until they’re older, bigger, stronger and possibly more fearful, we’re teaching them from the beginning:
✨ Grooming is normal; this is a “spaw” day!
✨ Grooming is safe; I am safe!
✨ I know what to expect here and I’m not scared.
And THAT is how we work toward creating confident, happy grooming dogs! 🥹🤍
BUT, did you know:
Even breeds that don’t require regular haircuts still benefit tremendously from early professional grooming. Nails, baths, drying, brushing, ear care and general handling are things your dog will experience throughout their entire life. Your dog has short hair? Oh boy, they sure shed! 🤣 Bring that baby to me- I can help cut down on that!
So, your puppy’s first year is SUCH an important learning window.
Don’t wait until they “need” a groom to introduce them to grooming.
Start young.
Stay consistent.
Keep them on that 4–5 week schedule. 🐾
You’re not just investing in how your puppy looks today — you’re helping create a dog who can confidently, safely handle grooming for the rest of their life. 🤍
