๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ PRINCE UPDATE ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

Prince continues to make wonderful progress in the Pawsitive 4Paws Training Program as he prepares for his forever home.

This handsome boy still has that fun puppy personality, but he has been working hard on learning the skills needed to be successful in the human world. Prince enjoys his walks, loves attention, and has developed a solid foundation of behaviors that will help him transition into his future family.

โœ” Loose Leash Walking
โœ” Sit
โœ” Down
โœ” Settle
โœ” Let's Go
โœ” Wait
โœ” Stay
โœ” Silence
โœ” Place

One of Prince's favorite skills is Place, where he can relax, settle, and make good choices while life happens around him.

When Prince finds his forever family, they won't be doing it alone. His adoption includes guidance on setting up his new home for success and training transition sessions to help ensure a smooth adjustment.

Prince has put in the work. Now he's waiting for a family to continue his journey.

Could that family be yours? ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ JAGGER UPDATE ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

Jagger has officially completed his decompression phase, and now the real work beginsโ€”discovering who Jagger truly is.

With the stress of shelter life behind him, he's starting to show me more of his personality, strengths, and the areas where he needs guidance. Right now, I'm learning that Jagger struggles with passing cars, bicyclists, and maintaining focus once he leaves the property.

The good news? Jagger doesn't appear to lack confidence. He's simply learning what behaviors are successful in the human world he lives in.

Every day provides new information, and every lesson helps me better understand how to set him up for long-term success.

Stay tuned and watch him grow. This journey isn't about perfectionโ€”it's about understanding, communication, and helping Jagger become the best version of himself.

๐Ÿพ This is why I shape behaviors first. ๐Ÿ’œ

Arlo is working on a 10-foot lead, which means he absolutely has the option to move away, disconnect, and explore the environment.

But notice what he's choosing to do instead...

๐Ÿพ Stay connected
๐Ÿพ Remain near his human
๐Ÿพ Check in voluntarily
๐Ÿพ Return to the Reward Area

Too many people start by focusing on a formal "Heel" position. I do the opposite.

First, I shape the Reward Area. Once the dog understands where reinforcement happens and begins choosing that area consistently, loose leash walking and other walking skills become much easier.

Before I ever focus on adding distractions, or covering long stretches of ground, I want the behavior itself. I want the dog making the choice.

None of this was achieved through corrections, leash pressure, or repeatedly calling his name.

This is the result of shaping and reinforcing the behaviors I want repeated.

The goal is not to force a dog to stay beside us.

The goal is to create a dog that chooses to stay connected to us. ๐Ÿถโœจ

And for a young Dachshund who finds the world incredibly exciting, that's a pretty big accomplishment. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Arlo's newest skill unlocked: Loose Leash Walking! ๐Ÿพ

For a young Dachshund whose world is full of exciting squirrels, birds, smells, and dogs, learning to walk with a loose leash is no small accomplishment. ๐Ÿ’œ

Loose leash walking isn't about forcing a dog to stay beside you. It's about teaching them that staying connected to their human is more rewarding than pulling toward the environment.

Arlo started by learning:
๐Ÿพ Offered Attention
๐Ÿพ His Reward Area
๐Ÿพ How to check in with his human
๐Ÿพ How to make better choices around distractions

As those foundation skills grew, loose leash walking became much easier because he understood where reinforcement happens and why staying connected pays off.

Remember, we don't build loose leash walking by correcting pulling. We build it by reinforcing the behaviors we want repeated.

Way to go, Arlo! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿพ Arlo's 2nd Step: Shaping the Reward Area ๐Ÿพ

Now that we have begun shaping Offered Attention, the next step is teaching Arlo where I would like him to be during a leisure walk.

My "Reward Area" is the vicinity of either legโ€”left side or right side. I am not concerned with a formal heel position. I will also accept a loose leash position, but shaping the Reward Area first makes loose leash walking much easier to achieve.

You'll notice I am not walking long distances in this exercise. In fact, my movement is only a few steps forward and backward.

Why?

Because I am not focused on distance yet.

I am focused on shaping the area I would like Arlo to choose to be within while we are out together. Once the area is understood, we can begin adding movement, duration, distractions, and eventually distance.

Arlo is working on a 10-foot lead, so technically he has the option to disconnect and travel to the end of the leash. However, I am not offering that option just yet. Right now, I want to build value in staying connected and choosing the human before increasing his freedom.

Remember, behavior is built in layers. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿพ Step 1: Shaping Offered Attention
๐Ÿพ Step 2: Shaping the Reward Area
๐Ÿพ Step 3: Building Loose Leash Walking

One successful choice at a time.

๐Ÿพ Meet Arlo! ๐Ÿพ

Arlo is an adolescent Dachshund who is having a little trouble going against what comes naturally to his breed. Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers, and while there aren't many badgers roaming around his neighborhood, squirrels, birds, and especially other dogs are incredibly exciting substitutes! ๐Ÿคญ

Because everything is so exciting for Arlo, we are currently working on impulse control, and our very first exercise is Shaping Offered Attention.

Notice:
๐Ÿพ No cues are being used
๐Ÿพ No calling his name
๐Ÿพ No asking for attention

Instead, I am simply waiting for him to offer behaviors on his own. A slight nose turn, a head turn in my direction, checking in with me, or choosing to walk back toward me are all behaviors I am looking to reinforce.

My expectations are intentionally low right now because I am learning what Arlo can handle and what he is capable of offering within this environment.

We are also staying just off the front yard of his home. The goal is not to add extra excitement or stress. The goal is to create success.

During shaping, I always use:
๐Ÿพ Kibble as the reset
๐Ÿพ A-Value treats for desired behaviors

The kibble helps reset the exercise while the high-value reinforcement is reserved for the choices I want to see repeated.
And before anyone says it... ๐Ÿ˜‚

I know most of my videos feature big breeds, but I work with the little ones too! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Donโ€™t forget about Princeโ€ฆ heโ€™s still waiting for his Furever Home ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿถ

Prince is ready to find his person โ€” preferably someone who enjoys the outdoors as much as he does. ๐ŸŒณโ˜€๏ธ

This handsome boy loves:
๐Ÿพ Exploring
๐Ÿพ Outdoor adventures
๐Ÿพ Fresh air & walks
๐Ÿพ Spending time with his humans

Prince has been working hard in his training journey and is looking for a home that will continue building his confidence, structure, and love for life.

If youโ€™re searching for an outdoorsy best friend, Prince may just be your guy. ๐Ÿพโœจ

๐Ÿพ Three weeks ago Jagger was on Death Row.

After assessing him, I knew the behaviors I was seeing were heavily connected to his environment and stress levels. In the shelter he was labeled โ€œAggressiveโ€ โ€” and sadly, labels like that can become a death sentence for dogs in shelter environments.

I chose Jagger to enter my Behavior Modification Program because I believed there was more to him beneath the stress, survival behaviors, and overstimulation.

Although we are only just getting through his decompression timeframe (10+ days due to him being in the shelter over 30 days), the changes have already been incredible to watch.

Now that his environment is safe, structured, and less stressful:
๐Ÿพ He is decompressing
๐Ÿพ Learning to trust
๐Ÿพ Showing calmer behaviors
๐Ÿพ Beginning to emotionally regulate
๐Ÿพ Finally getting the opportunity to simply be a dog

Environment matters.
Stress matters.
Labels matter.

Jagger may possibly be available for adoption in August. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿถ
Stay tuned for his training journey.

๐Ÿพ The goal is not to force your dog through the environmentโ€ฆ
The goal is to help them FEEL safe within it. ๐Ÿ’œ

Real Life Training and acclimation usually doesnโ€™t look like traditional training.
It looks like:
๐Ÿพ Giving space
๐Ÿพ Allowing choices
๐Ÿพ Observing body language
๐Ÿพ Reinforcing calm, offered behaviors

No pressure.
No flooding.
No corrections.

Just patience, consistency, and creating positive experiences at the dogโ€™s pace.

Confidence is built when dogs learn they can safely process the world around them. ๐Ÿถโœจ
