🇺🇸🐾 The Four-Legged Heroes of 9/11
On September 11, 2001, hundreds of dogs answered the call alongside first responders. Search-and-rescue dogs climbed through the rubble looking for survivors. Detection dogs helped with recovery efforts. Guide dogs led their people to safety. Therapy dogs offered comfort when words simply weren’t enough.
But there’s a part of their story that doesn’t get enough attention.
These dogs worked among twisted metal, broken glass, smoke, dust and debris. Their paws, eyes and noses needed constant care from veterinary teams working alongside them.
And perhaps one of the most heartbreaking details: when search dogs went long periods without finding survivors, some became discouraged. Their handlers would sometimes stage a successful “find” so the dogs could receive their reward, rebuild their confidence and keep searching.
They didn’t understand what had happened that day.
They only knew they had a job to do — find someone, help someone, comfort someone.
Dogs like Bretagne, Riley, Roselle, Salty, Scout, Jake, Appollo and hundreds of others became part of the story of September 11th.
Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the four-legged heroes who worked beside them.
Some wore badges.
Some wore fire helmets.
And some left paw prints in the dust. 🐾🇺🇸
