We will be there for this event and we hope you are too! Don’t forget to bring your smartphone or tablet!

This would be a fabulous adventure for a school field trip and for homeschool too!

Gardening friends, grab your smart phone and come join the fun by looking for the many critters that can be found at Crawford State Park!

Thanks to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Crawford County Conservation District is hosting a BioBlitz this September, 09/15/2026 from 8am to 3pm in support of the Parks for Pollinators campaign.

What’s a BioBlitz? The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz is an event where community members work with park staff to create a snapshot of the variety of wildlife that can be found at Crawford State Park - Kansas Wildlife & Parks in September. We use a no-cost platform/app called iNaturalist to take pictures of plants, insects and animals to see what wildlife is present in the park on this day and provide us with more information about pollinators, which are essential to our ecosystem.

All photos all month long at the park and uploaded to the iNaturalist app count towards the BioBlitz.

This information will help us understand how we can better protect pollinators and other important wildlife in our community.

Sign-up to participate in our BioBlitz today on our Facebook event page!

Watch the sidewalk on your evening walk this week. The first woolly bears are crossing, and a woolly bear in the road is telling you something.

A caterpillar you catch marching in late August has quit eating for the year. It is house-hunting. Somewhere under loose bark, a woodpile, or the leaf pile you never got around to moving, it will curl up for the winter and do the thing almost nothing else in your yard can do. It freezes. Nearly solid, heart stopped, ice between its cells, all winter long.

Then in spring it thaws out, walks off, and turns into an Isabella tiger moth as if none of that happened.

So the first crossing you see is a season marker as real as a turned leaf. The little bear knows what the calendar is about to do. 🍂

You can use rubber bands on the milkweed pods to make it easier to harvest the seeds when they are ready. It will also prevent the milkweed bugs from getting to the seeds. (Photo by Linda Herard.)

ETA: I came home from work tonight, not feeling the best. I highly doubt I will make it tomorrow. I am sorry! I will try for next week if I don’t make it tomorrow.

We will be at the Pittsburg Farmers Market starting this Saturday through the Fall.

The Fall season is the best time to plant native perennials for Spring blooms. Native perennials develop deep roots over their first winter that produces strong, blooming plants in the Spring.

Watch our site for what plants will be ready each week. 4” pots are $5 and 6” pots are $7. Gallon pots are $10.
