Since 1974, the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society (GHHS) has been dedicated to the welfare and protection of animals. The organization is an independent, registered 501(c)3 nonprofit operating under no-kill standards. We are focused on helping orphaned, injured and abused pets by providing them safe shelter, care and nutrition which will help them lead happy, healthy lives. In addition, our mission

is to relieve the suffering and the prevention of cruelty to animals. We do not receive any government funding, and rely solely on contributions made by members of the community. Surrenders are appointment based- if you need to surrender an animal, please call the shelter to make an appointment.

🍁Empty the Shelters is back this September! 🍁

Looking for a new adventure buddy, couch snuggler, or tiny chaos coordinator? From September 18–30, GHHS is joining the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters adoption event to help more amazing pets find their forever homes! 🏡💛

💸 Special adoption fees:
🐶 Dogs 6 months & up: $60
🐱 Cats & kittens: $35

Our shelter is full of sweet, silly, playful, and lovable pets who are ready to make themselves at home—preferably on your lap, in your bed, and directly in the middle of whatever you’re trying to do. 😉

⚡ Pro tip: Get pre-approved before you visit! We can’t hold animals, but having an approved application makes it quick and easy to take home your new best friend when you find “the one.”

We are closed Sundays and Mondays, so be sure to plan your visit Tuesday–Saturday. Come meet your match and help us Empty the Shelters! 🐾🐶🐱

Meet Brandy ❤️

Brandy is one sweet girl with a little bit of sass thrown in. She was found as a stray and animal control wouldn’t take her, so now she’s looking for someone who will give her the chance she deserves.

She walks pretty good on a leash, knows sit, and LOVES treats. Seriously, any treat will do. 😂

Toys aren’t really her thing… yet. She’ll chase a tennis ball, but once she gets to it she’s like, “Now what?” She doesn’t pick it up or bring it back, so we’re thinking she may need someone to show her how fun toys can be.

We think Brandy has had puppies in the past, too.

One thing we’re working on with her is other dogs. She reacts horribly to dogs in the kennel area, but she recently met Rascal and did surprisingly well! They were able to touch noses, sniff each other, and walk side by side. We didn’t want to push her, so we called it a day there and will keep working on introductions to see how she does.

She also had a pretty big reaction to a cat outside, so we’d definitely want to be cautious with cats and could potentially try a controlled introduction in the building later.

She does good with kids, loves her treats, and has been a really sweet girl with us.

Brandy may need a little patience and someone willing to help her figure some things out, but she has a lot of potential. And honestly, we think once she’s comfortable, she’s going to be one heck of a fun dog. ❤️

After almost 4 days of trying, countless hours, sleepless nights, and moments of feeling defeated, our director and her husband were finally able to catch her with a slip lead! 🖤

A huge thank you to Erin's Angels Rescue for helping us with a trap and to our GHHS Director and staff for their dedication to bringing her to safety. ❤️

Everyone, meet Rogue. 🖤 She is SAFE, FED, and will know nothing but love, safety, and compassion from here on out. 💜🐾

Our county Animal Control does not take injured dogs or dogs requiring medical care. When these animals are found and Animal Control cannot take them, we are often the next call.

We receive no county funding, which means the cost of caring for injured and sick animals falls entirely on our shelter. Many require emergency veterinary care, medications, diagnostics, surgery, hospitalization, or ongoing treatment.

When you donate, foster, adopt, volunteer, share our posts, or support our shelter, you help give us the ability to say, “Yes, we’ll help,” when an animal like Rogue has nowhere else to go.

We will continue to step up whenever we possibly can. We just need our community behind us so we can keep doing it. ❤️🐾

URGENT: Loving Home Needed for Two Dogs 🐾

These two sweet dogs are in urgent need of a safe place to go. Their family has to return home out of state on Tuesday, so we are hoping to find them a loving foster or permanent home as soon as possible.

🐶 Both are good with other dogs.
🐱 They have not been around cats, so their compatibility with cats is unknown.
👶 They have also never been around small children, so we are unsure how they would do with them.

Meet Scout & Fergus! 🐾❤️

Scout and Fergus are a bonded pair of 4-year-old neutered boys looking for their forever home together! These two have been through a lot and are hoping their next home will be the one they never have to leave.

They are:

✅ FELV/FIV negative

Scout and Fergus were adopted together in 2021 and sadly returned after the family’s dog became aggressive toward them. They have lived with a dog before, and despite that experience, both boys remain sweet and would likely do well with a calm, cat-friendly dog with proper introductions.

Scout loves treats and Fergus is a very sweet boy who loves spending time with his brother. These two are happiest together and deserve a family who will keep them safe and loved for the rest of their lives.

This week, Karen is helping us spread the word about some URGENT needs at the shelter! 🐶🐱💙 With so many animals in our care, we go through food quickly, and our supplies are running low.

Our current wishlist includes:

🚨 Purina Puppy Chow — URGENT
🚨 Purina Cat Chow — URGENT
🥫 Canned dog food
🥫 Canned cat food

Purina food is preferred and helps us provide consistent nutrition for the dogs and cats in our care. Every bag, can, and donation makes a difference in keeping little bellies full while they wait for their forever homes! 🐾💙
