Celebrating the team members who make VWP a great place for pets and people.
This week: Gabrielle

Gabrielle is a veterinary assistant who has been working in the veterinary field since the beginning of 2025 and has been part of the practice since October. She has spent her entire life caring for a wide variety of animals, which led her to pursue a degree in Equine Studies with a training concentration. Gabrielle gained hands-on experience working at an equine hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina for nine months before joining VWP.

She enjoys building meaningful relationships with her fellow team members, clients, and patients, and is passionate about continuing to learn and grow in her role each day. Gabrielle has always had a deep love for animals, making a career in veterinary medicine a natural path for her.

At home, Gabrielle has two beloved horses—Pete, a 16-year-old Quarter Horse, and Mr. Darcy, her Half-Arab yearling—as well as four cats. Her horses are her main hobby, but she also enjoys reading and crocheting in her free time. While horses are her favorite animals, she says if she could have any exotic animal, it would be an elephant.

Have you noticed that your dog has a persistent, dry cough? If so, it could be kennel cough.

Kennel cough is an infectious and highly contagious bronchitis of dogs that is characterized by a harsh, hacking cough and is spread through aerosol droplets.

Symptoms to watch for:
- dry, hacking cough
- retching/vomiting
- sneezing
- eye or nasal discharge

If you notice any other symptoms, such as fever or loss of appetite, you should contact your veterinarian right away.

Much like human colds, there is no full protection from kennel cough. However, vaccines, such as Bordetella, can partially protect your dog from the viruses and bacteria that cause kennel cough.

Help protect your pup by staying up to date on recommended vaccinations, avoiding contact with sick dogs, and contacting your vet if symptoms develop.🐾

Planning a trip with your pet? Prior to traveling, there are a few different steps that you should take to ensure your pet's safety!✈️🚗

If you are traveling by air:
- Try to book direct flights
- Check that vaccines are up to date
- Consider a checkup prior to flying
- Be sure to give potty breaks frequently
- Follow all airline policies to ensure safety

If you are traveling by car:
- Consider acclimating your pet to car rides
- Make frequent stops
- Make sure you have plenty of your pet's necessities
- Ensure that your pet has plenty of space

A little preparation goes a long way towards a safe and happy adventure for both you and your pet!🗺️🐾

This week: Kelsey

Kelsey has a genuine passion for animal care and overall wellbeing. Her love for animals extends beyond the workplace, as she enjoys spending time with her dog, two cats, her husband, and her family, who play an important role in her life. Outside of the clinic, she likes to unwind by fishing, appreciating the outdoors and a slower, more relaxed pace. She takes pride in being hardworking, compassionate, and always eager to continue learning and growing in her field.

Today we honor World Pet Memorial Day, a day to remember the companions who left paw prints on our hearts forever. 🤍🐾

Our pets are never “just animals.” They are family, best friends, and constant sources of unconditional love. They greet us on our hardest days, celebrate with us on our best ones, and give us a kind of loyalty that can never be replaced.

Though they may no longer be by our side, their love stays with us in the quiet moments, the memories, and the little things that remind us of them each day.

Today, we remember them. We miss them. And we are forever grateful for the time we were lucky enough to have.

Celebrating the team members who make VWP a great place for pets and people.
This week: Maria

Maria serves as the Large Animal Inventory Manager and brings eight years of experience in veterinary medicine. She attended Kent State University for Biology and completed her veterinary technology training at Ross Medical. Maria has a strong passion for equine emergency medicine and especially enjoys the excitement of foaling season. She values the relationships she builds with both clients and coworkers and appreciates that no two days in large animal medicine are ever the same.

Growing up on a farm, Maria always knew she wanted to work in the veterinary field, with a specific focus on equine care. She originally aspired to work out of a veterinary truck in the field and pursued that goal by completing a student externship with Dr. Middleton at Orrville. It proved to be a perfect fit, and she continues to make the drive from Portage County because of her passion for the advanced large animal care provided here. She especially enjoys working with horses, and the Amish community, and finds caring for newborn foals in the spring to be one of the most rewarding parts of her job.

Outside of work, Maria enjoys spending time outdoors—especially in warm weather. She loves riding horses, attending Arabian horse shows, relaxing by the water, and spending evenings by a bonfire with friends. She also enjoys staying active through barre and Pilates classes. Known for thriving in hot and humid conditions, Maria brings a positive and energetic attitude even on the warmest days—something her coworkers often joke about. Arabian horses and German Shepherds have always been a big part of her life and continue to be her favorite breeds.

Maria would describe herself as outgoing and energetic, and she recently welcomed her first baby, Luke, with her husband. He is already beginning to enjoy time spent in the barn. As a fun fact, Maria also manages the equine and large animal page, helping keep clients connected and informed!

Warmer weather is here, and it is important to keep our furry friends safe in the heat! ☀️
Here are 6 tips to remember this summer:
1. Never leave animals alone in a parked vehicle
2. Give pets plenty of fresh, clean water
3. Avoid overdoing outdoor exercise
4. Be aware that certain breeds, such as pugs and bulldogs, are more susceptible to overheating
5. Protect pets' paws by limiting exposure to hot surfaces
6. Know some of the signs of overheating, including excessive panting or drooling, increased heart and respiratory rate, discoloration of the tongue or gums, and unusual behavior like disorientation or lethargy

⚠️ If you suspect your pet is overheating, avoid placing them in an ice bath.

While it may seem like the fastest way to cool them down, sudden exposure to very cold water can cause blood vessels to constrict, making it harder for the body to release heat. Rapid temperature changes can also increase stress on your pet's system.

Instead, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water if they are able to drink, and use cool (not ice-cold) water along with fans to help gradually lower their body temperature.

If you ever suspect your pet is overheating, immediately move them to a cool area, offer them small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian right away.
