✨ Congratulations to one of my students and her family on the purchase of Corey! ✨

I couldn’t be happier for everyone involved in this special match. Corey is an incredible horse with a wonderful mind, kind personality, and so much potential. It has been a pleasure getting to know him, and I’m excited to see this new partnership grow.

The best part? Corey isn’t going far! He’ll be staying here with me as a boarder, and we’re looking forward to continuing his education and development. With his great attitude and versatility, he may even have a future as part of our lesson program.

Teaching the Canter to a Standardbred

Many Standardbreds struggle with canter transitions not because they can’t canter, but because they were bred and trained to maintain a trot or pace. Developing a balanced canter requires strength, coordination, and confidence in muscles and movements they may have rarely used before.

One of the best tools for teaching canter is a gentle hill incline. Working uphill naturally encourages horses to engage their hindquarters, lift through their back, and carry more weight from behind. This helps build the strength and balance needed for successful canter departures while reducing the tendency to rush or pace.

When asking for canter, focus on a forward, balanced trot and reward even a few correct strides. Many Standardbreds will only offer a few strides at first, and that’s perfectly normal. Those small successes are building blocks toward a balanced, relaxed canter.

Remember, retraining a Standardbred means teaching both the mind and body a new skill. With patience, proper conditioning, and thoughtful use of hills, these horses can develop a comfortable and confident canter under saddle.

Summer break is officially underway, and we wasted absolutely no time getting our boots in the stirrups! ☀️🐴

This first weekend of summer was packed full of horse-powered adventures. We kicked things off by covering plenty of arena sand at our first Hunter/Jumper show, then hit the trails in the beautiful Michaux State Forest—not once, but twice in one day! From the show ring to the trails, we were fortunate to rotate between some truly amazing horses and make the most of every mile.

Always on the go and never a dull moment—we’re constantly stirring up fun here at Jamie Letham Horsemanship, LLC!

A huge congratulations to Charley on her wins at Saturday’s show! 🏆🎉 What an incredible way to kick off your summer. We’re proud of all your hard work and excited to see what the rest of the season has in store!

From all of us at Jamie Letham Horsemanship, LLC, this Memorial Day we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication gave us the freedoms we cherish every day.

As we spend time with family, friends, and the horses we love, may we never forget those who gave all so we could live freely. Today we ride in remembrance, gratitude, and respect for our fallen heroes.
