The apology comes before the grief for many pet parents.

Just a rabbit. Only a bird. Only a lizard. The word gets smaller before the feeling is allowed out, like a toll you pay for permission to be sad in front of people.

You learned that apology somewhere, and you don't owe it here.

There's no species where you stop reaching for the leash, or the cage door, or the stall latch, out of pure habit. No size of animal where you don't still say their name out loud in an empty room.

Twenty years or two, a horse or a hamster. Somebody was the center of your whole day, and now nobody is. Grief doesn't sort by weight class.

Yours counts.

We understand what it's like to love an older pet and to face what comes with that. If you need support or community, follow us at Love, Baxter 🧡
