Today at social, we got to celebrate little Gracie’s second birthday! We have had the pleasure of being part of her life since she was just a couple months old when she started socialization. She’s such a well balanced, social little girl who is well behaved and very, very intelligent. Her owners truly have put the time to help her become the dog that she is!!

Does your dog hate thunderstorms? Do you dread storm season here in Florida?

I used to feel exactly the same way.

About 20 years ago, I had a dog with severe thunderstorm anxiety. Every time a storm rolled in, I would rush home from work, climb into his bed with him, cuddle him, hug him, kiss him, and tell him everything was going to be okay.

One day, a trainer friend called while this was happening. I told him what I was doing, and he immediately told me to stop. He explained that constantly fussing over my dog’s fear could actually make the problem worse by reinforcing the anxious state of mind.

That conversation completely changed the way I approached fearful behaviors.

Since then, I’ve owned many different dogs. None have ever struggled with storm anxiety the way that dog did.

My current dog, Dane, doesn’t love thunderstorms either. But from the day I adopted him, I taught him that his crate was a safe, comfortable place to relax. He spends time in there regularly, not just when he’s stressed.

So when a storm rolls in, I simply tell him to go to his crate. That’s it. No big production, no panic, no fuss. He settles down and relaxes.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is the importance of teaching dogs how to cope instead of constantly trying to comfort them through every uncomfortable moment.

For Dane, his crate is his safe place. Because of the foundation we built long before the storms arrived, thunderstorms are no longer something I have to worry about.

I’ve tried medications, ThunderShirts, and plenty of other things over the years. Some dogs may benefit from those tools, but for me, the biggest game changer was proper crate training and teaching my dogs to find comfort and confidence in their own space.

A crate should never be a punishment. When introduced correctly, it can become one of the most valuable tools you have—especially during stressful situations like thunderstorms.

And for new pups that don’t know that they should be afraid of storms? Every single time you hear a boom, give them treats. Keep them busy train them during storms walk them around the house on a leash do anything to show them that life goes on during a storm 🙂

If your dog crates well during storms and you have seen the benefits of this, please comment :)

Today’s agility class might have been one of my favorites yet.

We had three dogs who came from pretty significant trauma and had developed a lot of insecurities and fears. We also had two younger dogs who missed much of their critical socialization window and were extremely nervous, fearful, and anxious. Along with them were a few well-balanced dogs that simply came for the fun of it!

Our nervous dogs started off so afraid that they wanted nothing to do with the obstacles. They objected in every way possible. Their owners tried using the highest-value treats, but the dogs would turn their noses away because they were operating from a state of fear and simply didn’t understand what was being asked of them.

After lots of patience, repetition, and showing the dogs exactly what to do, their body language began to change. Confidence started to replace uncertainty. Before long, every single dog successfully completed the obstacles with a new sense of security, wagging tails, and a whole lot of pride.

Agility is so much more than what most people think it is. It’s not just about running through obstacles. It’s about confidence building. It’s about teaching dogs that they are capable of doing amazing things, even when they initially believe they can’t. At the same time, these dogs got valuable exposure to people and other dogs in a structured environment, creating positive memories.

Next class is June 29th.

Some of my dogs trying out tomorrow’s agility course! 😉 I always try to switch it up as much as possible.

Agility classes are awesome because they offer so many benefits. They’re great for shy dogs that need confidence-building, provide structured socialization around other dogs without forcing uncomfortable interactions, and give dogs an incredible outlet for both mental stimulation and physical exercise. Most importantly, they help dogs discover just how much they’re capable of doing!

In the first part of the video, you’ll see my dog Rupert, who is afraid of pretty much everything. On his first run through the course, he was moving in slow motion and looked absolutely terrified. On the second run, he started picking up speed and wagging his tail. By the third run, he was confidently moving through the course without stopping. Watching that transformation is exactly why I love agility—it’s such a huge confidence boost for so many dogs.

You can join one of our monthly agility classes, or schedule a private agility session, where we’ll also be doing some swimming! 🐾🏊‍♂️
