🐱 FOREIGN BODIES: WHAT ARE CATS EATING?! 🐱

Cats are curious creatures, and sometimes that curiosity leads to an unexpected trip to the vet! From swallowing things they shouldn’t to getting into things they can’t digest, foreign bodies can cause serious problems for our feline friends.

🚨 Let’s play a little guessing game!

🥇 What do you think is the MOST common foreign material we remove from cats?

💭 A toy? A piece of string? Something they found on the floor?

NOPE! It’s a HAIRBALL! 🐈💨

🥈 And what do you think comes in SECOND?

👀 HAIR ELASTICS! 😱

Yes, those little hair ties can be a BIG problem! Cats love to play with them, chew on them, and sometimes swallow them. Unfortunately, hair elastics can cause dangerous intestinal obstructions that may require endoscopic removal or surgery.

Other common foreign bodies include string, ribbon, thread, small toys, and pieces of plastic.

🐾 How can you help protect your cat?
✅ Keep hair elastics, string, ribbon, and small objects out of reach.
✅ Store toys safely when playtime is over.
✅ Contact your veterinarian if you suspect your cat swallowed something they shouldn’t have.

⚠️ If you see string hanging from your cat’s mouth or rear end, DO NOT pull it! It can cause serious internal damage. Contact your veterinarian immediately.

🦷 Dental Disease & Tooth Resorption in Cats 🐱

Did you know that most cats will develop some form of dental disease during their lifetime? One especially common and painful condition is tooth resorption.

Tooth resorption causes the tooth to slowly break down, often below the gumline, making it difficult to see at home. Cats may continue eating normally even when they are experiencing significant dental pain.

Signs can include:
🐾 Drooling or bad breath
🐾 Dropping food or chewing differently
🐾 Pawing at the mouth
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Or no obvious signs at all!

Because much of the damage can occur beneath the gums, dental X-rays are an important part of evaluating a cat’s teeth. Early detection and treatment can help keep your cat comfortable and pain-free. ❤️

🐱💧 Cats & Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in older cats, but it doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy a good quality of life! ❤️

CKD is progressive, but early detection and treatment can help slow its progression and keep cats feeling their best. Regular bloodwork, urine testing, hydration, nutrition, and medications when needed can all play an important role.

Watch for changes in thirst, urination, appetite, weight, or energy, and talk with your veterinarian if you notice anything unusual.

🐱 IBD or Intestinal Lymphoma?

Chronic vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, or changes in appetite can be signs of gastrointestinal disease in cats.

Two conditions we commonly see are Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and intestinal lymphoma. They can cause very similar symptoms, so additional testing may be needed to determine what’s going on.

The good news? Both are treatable! ❤️

With the right diagnosis and treatment plan, many cats with IBD or intestinal lymphoma can feel better and enjoy a good quality of life.

If your cat has ongoing GI symptoms, don’t just assume they have a “sensitive stomach.” 🐾 Chronic GI problems deserve a closer look.

🐱🎃 October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month! 🐾

Those extra treats and a little extra fluff might seem harmless, but carrying extra weight can increase the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and other health problems in our furry friends.

❤️ Keeping your pet at a healthy weight means more happy, healthy years together!

🐾 Not sure if your pet is at their ideal weight? Ask your veterinarian for guidance on diet, portion sizes, and healthy weight goals.

Remember, a little less kibble can mean a lot more healthy living! 🐈💕
