FEAR FREE FRIDAY
Something we’ve changed about the way we handle cats…
For years, many of us were taught that the best way to restrain a cat was to scruff them and stretch them out for an exam or procedure.
It was just how we did things.
But we’ve learned a lot since becoming a Fear Free Certified Practice.
Today, we know that a cat becoming still doesn’t necessarily mean they’re calm. They may actually be frightened or overwhelmed.
So we’ve changed the way we approach cats at the Animal Hospital of Orleans. We don’t scruff and stretch them. Instead, we use gentle handling, pay attention to their body language, and give them choices whenever possible.
And sometimes, it’s about figuring out what that particular cat likes.
Take this handsome guy in our video.
Felix wasn’t too interested in the food we offered. Okay… noted. 😹
But he LOVED catnip!
Once we figured that out, he was much more interested in hanging out with us—and he took his vaccines beautifully.
That’s one of the things we love about Fear Free care. There isn’t one magic trick that works for every cat.
Sometimes it’s treats. Sometimes it’s catnip. Sometimes it’s a quiet room, a little patience, or simply giving them a minute to decide they’re okay with what’s happening.
We’re not trying to “make” cats behave.
We’re trying to make them feel safe. 🐾
And honestly? We think that’s a much better way to practice veterinary medicine.
Fear Free Friday — because how we care for them matters just as much as the care we give them. 💙
