Sometimes I look back at my grooms and wonder how the neck I did that. One of the most fulfilling parts of grooming for me is the incredible transformation the dog goes through. Not to mention she can see properly again and feels like a million bucks. ✨ I even found her gorgeous lashes.

Sometimes dog grooming is doing the lord’s work.

When I first got into dog grooming, I dreamed of grooming glamorous Poodles and Cockers in long, elegant show coats. While I still get to experience that side of grooming, sometimes this job is truly about doing the Lord’s work! Some dogs come in after a year without grooming, with painful mats against their skin, hair covering their eyes, and nails so long they curl into their paw pads. These grooms require patience, compassion, and a slower approach, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a dog leave feeling comfortable and relieved. These are the moments that remind me why I do what I do!

Regular grooming is about so much more than looking cute. It’s an important part of your dog’s health and comfort. Depending on breed and coat type, most dogs benefit from professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Mats can develop quickly, hair can obstruct their vision, and overgrown nails can make walking painful. Every dog deserves to feel comfortable, clean, and cared for!

I’ve groomed a lot of Bernadoodles lately. I can say they have always been extra sweet and goofy but a workout because they are so large. This big fella is Bernie the Bernadoodle and is only a year old and was such a sweetheart.

Sometimes starting fresh if a coat is matted is the best you can do for your dog. Contrary to what other grooming shops may tell their head and tail does not need to be shaved so they can keep their cute teddy bear look.

This little guy is John, an American Cocker Spaniel, and he came to Nautilus Dog Grooming for his very first professional haircut. He is a special client for me as he was bred by my mentor at Encore Cockers & Cavaliers. He is a show prospect and we’ll be growing and maintaining his beautiful coat for the show ring. I’m very excited to watch John grow into a gorgeous AKC champion.

The last photo, taken as he was leaving after his groom, feels extra special to me because over 20 years ago my biggest dream as a groomer and cocker owner was to groom American Cocker Spaniels for the show ring, and this picture is visual representation of that dream coming true.
