The relationship between Doglando and Doglando Foundation has always been rooted in one shared purpose: to make a meaningful difference in the lives of dogs and to enhance the human dog relationship by way of real participation and rich presence.

When you’re Pudding and you’ve decided walking is completely optional. 😂🤎

Luckily, team member Darien understood the assignment.

Pudding said, “I’m just a baby.”
Darien said, “Say less.”

Just a little Doglando moment of a puppy living her absolute best life while our team members somehow become trainers, teachers, playmates… and occasionally personal transportation. 😂

Why do dogs dig?

Because they’re dogs.

Digging isn’t automatically a “bad behavior” that needs to be stopped. It’s a natural behavior that dogs have been doing long before they were living in our homes and sleeping on our couches.

Dogs may dig to search for smells, uncover insects or little critters, bury something valuable, create a cooler place to lie down, investigate what’s underneath the ground, or simply because digging itself feels GOOD.

Think about everything happening during that one simple behavior.

Their nose is working.

Their paws are working.

They’re moving soil, ripping through roots, following scent trails, making decisions and discovering what happens when they interact with their environment.

There’s a whole lot of DOG happening in that hole.

And sometimes, they aren’t digging for anything at all. The act itself can be enriching. Scratching, pushing, pulling, sniffing and throwing dirt around gives them an outlet for behaviors that are naturally part of who they are.

That doesn’t mean we need to sacrifice the entire backyard. 😂 We can give them appropriate places to dig. A designated dirt area, sandbox, loose soil, leaves or even hiding toys and treats for them to discover can give that behavior somewhere to go.

Instead of always asking,

“How do I get my dog to stop doing this?”

Sometimes the better question is…

“Why does my dog NEED to do this, and how can I give them a safe way to experience it?”

Let dogs dig.

Let them sniff.

Let them explore.

Let them get dirty.

Let them be dogs. 🐾

Happy Birthday to Zoey, Jeter & Apollo ❤️🐾

These three have been part of Doglando for over four years. Four years of watching them grow, watching their personalities unfold, learning who they are, what they love, what makes them light up, and all the little things that make each of them so uniquely them.

When dogs have been with us this long, they become so much more than dogs who come to Doglando. They become part of our days. Part of our routines. Part of our stories. We know their faces, their quirks, their favorite things, and the ways they communicate without ever saying a word.

We’ve shared a whole lot of life with these three. Muddy days, swimming days, adventures, friendships, quiet moments, ridiculous moments, and thousands of ordinary days that somehow become the ones that mean the most.

And that’s the really special part of what we do. We don’t just get to know dogs for a season. We get the privilege of knowing some of them for years. Growing alongside them. Watching them change while also loving all the pieces of them that never do.

Zoey, Jeter and Apollo, thank you for giving us over four years of memories already.

You three are woven into Doglando. ❤️

Chasing squirrels. Chasing lizards. Chasing birds. 🐿️🦎

We get it.

It gives them something to do. It gets them running. It burns some energy. Sometimes it feels like the easiest way to let your dog outside and come back in a little more tired.

But what are they actually practicing while they’re out there?

When a dog spends their backyard time watching for squirrels, stalking lizards through the bushes, or taking off the second something moves, they aren’t just exercising.

They’re practicing pieces of a natural predatory sequence:

Orient → Stalk → Chase → Kill

Orient — they notice movement, sound or scent and turn their attention toward it.

Stalk — they watch, track, creep closer and wait for an opportunity.

Chase — movement triggers pursuit. The squirrel runs, the lizard darts, and the dog takes off.

Kill — if they actually catch what they’re chasing, the sequence can continue. Even when they never catch it, they’ve still practiced everything leading up to it.

Now think about how many repetitions a dog can get in one afternoon in the backyard.

See it. Lock on. Stalk it. Chase it. Lose it. Search for another one.

Again.

And again.

And again.

We may look outside and think, Perfect, they’re tiring themselves out.

But physically tired doesn’t always mean fulfilled or settled.

Instead, we may be creating a dog who becomes really good at scanning the environment for movement. A dog who has a harder time disengaging once they’ve locked onto something. A dog whose recall disappears when a squirrel takes off. A dog who comes back inside physically exhausted but whose brain is still looking for the next thing.

The backyard isn’t the problem.

What they repeatedly practice in the backyard matters.

Sometimes they need to learn how to explore.

How to think.

How to disengage.

How to come back down.

Go outside with them.

Let them sniff. Scatter part of their meal through the grass and let them search. Hide things for them to find. Dig. Explore. Practice recalling away from something interesting. Sit together and watch the world without needing to interact with everything that moves.

And yes, let them run.

We’re not trying to take away the things dogs naturally love to do. We’re giving them more ways to use their bodies, their noses and their brains.

Because your dog doesn’t always need to come inside exhausted.

Sometimes they need to practice exploring.

Thinking.

Disengaging.

Settling.

And simply being outside without constantly waiting for the next thing to chase.

Your backyard can be more than a place to tire your dog out. It can be a place where they learn how to exist in their environment.
