Michigan Informational Alert: Crop/Dock Ban Introduced, AKC

A bill has been introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives that would ban ear cropping, tail docking, and “debarking.” No individual may perform these procedures, and veterinarians may only do so if relieving an injury, illness, infection, etc.

House Bill 6009 has been assigned to the House Agriculture Committee and is not currently scheduled for a hearing. In addition, the House is in recess until August 6.

AKC opposes this bill, as these procedures, when done humanely, are not purely aesthetic, as the bill implies. Ear cropping and tail docking are important parts of certain breed standards, which were developed based on the traits for which the dog was originally bred, and in some cases, actually protect a dog from harm and serious injury later in life. “Debarking”, or bark softening, is a humane, minimally-invasive procedure performed by a veterinarian when all other training methods have failed, and may allow a dog to remain in a loving home rather than being taken to a shelter. AKC and the Michigan Association for Pure-Bred Dogs are closely monitoring this proposal and will provide updates and more information if and when action is needed.

Let's Talk About It: please understand that when you research the "HISTORY" of the bloodlines that you are using in your program, this does not stop at knowing the dogs in said bloodlines and the accomplishments they have acquired. This means researching the faults and the problems with in the bloodline. There is NO bloodline absolved of these issues. NONE! And remember No 1 dog has it all! Do the research!!!

MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND:
My dogs are a personal dream '*.
One day when I'm very old and can't walk anymore, this will be in my heart, the trophy of my memories.
Whenever I'm with my dogs alive I'm happy just thinking about how wonderful they are.
I stopped explaining myself to those who don't understand and learned to communicate with others who have the same mindset.
I know amazing people that I now call friends all over the world
because of my dogs.
I've spent money
I didn't have and gave up a lot of
things, but all that isn't worth a special moment with my dogs.
They are not just a pet, & or something I own, they are the missing piece of my soul and spirit, they are part of me.
And when someone tells me "it's just a dog".
I shake my head and smile...
A dog... only the one who loves him understands...
I wish my friends and all their dogs good karma.
And so the adventure continues ...
