Thank you to everyone who’s been checking in on me. I wanted to give a little update on how surgery went.
What was supposed to be about a 1-hour surgery ended up taking about 2½ hours. The surgeon found more damage than expected and had to repair my snapped tendon, nerve damage, and muscle tissue. I’m hoping to learn more at my follow-up appointment tomorrow because I was so out of it after surgery that I don’t remember much of what they explained.
Unfortunately, I didn’t react well to the anesthesia. I was extremely nauseous and threw up several times after surgery. We think I may have been given too much anesthesia for my size, or it could have been from all the medications on an empty stomach. Either way, it was a really rough recovery. To make things worse, one of the post-op nurses was pretty unkind and actually yelled at me for throwing up, which made the experience even harder.
The first day was the worst for pain. I was given pain medication in the hospital around 12:15 p.m., but because the pharmacy got backed up, I wasn’t able to get my prescription filled until about 8:40 that night. Going that long without medication after surgery was incredibly painful.
Thankfully, my pain became more manageable last night, but now that the nerves in my hand are starting to “wake up,” the pain has increased again. I’m hoping tomorrow’s appointment with the hand surgeon will give me a better understanding of everything they repaired and what recovery is going to look like.
