With another 90°+ day in the Chicagoland area, here is a quick way to keep your tank stable as the heat spikes
Tip #1: Add more oxygen to your tank.
As temperatures rise, the amount of available oxygen decreases. If your fish seem sluggish or are hanging at the top, (especially the larger fish) it’s often a sign of oxygen depletion.
Here are two quick ways to add more oxygen
1. Increase Surface Agitation: If you have a powerhead, angle it toward the surface to maximize gas exchange.
2. Adjust the water line if you have an HOB: If you have an HOB (hang-on-back) filter, decrease your water level enough so the outflow creates a stronger 'waterfall' effect. This creates more surface agitation and pulls more oxygen into the water column.
Pro-tip: Make sure NOT to drop your water too low where you filter isn't pushing water through. This can cause your filter to burn out!
