Today, we have a very special shout out to make for a very special human! James is not only a friend and client of ours, but he is also our go-to guy for horses that need to be hauled to the clinic for routine appointments or emergencies.

Thunderstorm, snow storm, middle of the night - James is a big reason we’ve been able to get many horses the care that they need in urgent situations, safely.

CVEC thanks you for your dedication to our patients and clients, James!

We will be closed until at least noon today due to the winter storm and road conditions. Later this morning we will determine if it is safe and necessary for our staff to be on the roads.

As always we are available for emergencies by calling 608-291-0505. If you have a non emergency need or question you can use the clinic texting line or email and those will be responded to when staff is back in the office.

🔍 Spotted: a cute foal running around the clinic...you know what that means! Foaling season is here! 🐴

Here are a few quick reminders from your CVEC team:
1. Update your foaling kit - Make sure you have clean towels, iodine/chlorohexidine for the navel, thermometer, flashlight, and your vet's ER number handy.

2. Monitor for early signs of labor so that you can be prepared and present when the foal comes - Udder development, waxing of teats, and restlessness are a few indicators that foaling is near.

3. Know the 1-2-3 rule and be ready to ring your vet sooner than later if your foal/mare is not hitting these check points.
1️⃣ Foal is standing within 1 hour
2️⃣ Foal is nursing within 2 hours
3️⃣ The mare's placenta has passed within 3 hours

4. Set up a 24 hour foal exam - If all goes well, no need to call us in the middle of the night (😁), however, we do want to hear from you right away the next morning so that we can get your mare and foal set up with a ~24 hour exam which includes IGG testing, to ensure that the foal received adequate antibodies from colostrum and catch any other health issues early.
