National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, mixed and pure and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues.

National Dog Day honors family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day - protecting our families and homes, for their law enforcement partner, for their blind companion, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and helping to locate and rescue victims of accidents and tragedy.

Every year, on August 17th, cat lovers worldwide come together to celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day. Not only is today about showing love to our sleek, midnight-colored feline friends; it’s also about raising awareness of black cats’ unique challenges.

For centuries, people have associated black cats with superstitions and myths. In many cultures, they’ve been linked to bad luck, witchcraft, and even death. Unfortunately, these outdated and unfounded beliefs have persisted into the modern era, leading people to overlook black cats in shelters.

Studies have shown that black cats are less likely to be adopted than their lighter-colored counterparts and often spend more time in shelters. This phenomenon, known as “black cat syndrome,” highlights the importance of Black Cat Appreciation Day to combat these negative stereotypes and encourage people to see black cats for what they are: loving, playful, and loyal companions. One key message of Black Cat Appreciation Day is to encourage the adoption of black cats. By choosing to adopt a black cat, you’re not only gaining a loyal and loving companion but also helping to break down the negative stereotypes that have unfairly affected these animals for generations.

Microchips reunite pets with families. Check the registration information for your pet's microchip once a year on Check the Chip Day.

If your pet isn’t already microchipped, make an appointment with your veterinarian now for microchipping. Register your pet's chip immediately with the manufacturer, making sure all of your contact information is included.

Ask your veterinarian to scan the microchip during your pet's annual wellness exam every year.

Each year on Check the Chip Day, check your pet's microchip registration information and update it if it's incomplete or no longer correct.
