His dream was to create a veterinary emergency facility that offers the highest level of veterinary medicine, while also focusing on the customer experience and developing a collaborative partnership with area general practice veterinarians. A huge congratulations to our own Dr. Joel Conn for being recognized by Rotary District 5240 with the prestigious "Opportunities Await Award" for Outstanding Leadership!

Over the past year, Joel has served as Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 5240, supporting clubs throughout our region and helping strengthen Rotary's mission of service, leadership, and community impact. The award was presented by District Governor Michael Dutra during the Pismo Beach Five Cities Rotary Community Service Awards Celebration.

Rotary District 5240's theme this year, "Opportunities Await," reflects the opportunities Rotary creates to serve, connect, grow, and make a difference in our communities. Joel's leadership exemplifies those values every day, both through Rotary and throughout the Central Coast.

We are incredibly proud of Joel and grateful for the time, energy, and heart he dedicates to serving others. Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved recognition!

Exciting news!!

We are proud to announce that we will be adding Dr. Claudia Bowman to our team here at PETS Hospital!!

Dr. Bowman is a board-certified Internist, specializing in Internal Medicine. Her services will bring specialized diagnostics and treatment of complex, chronic, and acute cases. We are thrilled to offer this added level of specialty care to better support your furry friends. This includes services such as Gastrointestinal/Hepatic disease, Renal/Endocrine disease, endoscopy, ultrasound, and minimally invasive procedures.

Rattlesnake season is here, and it is important to stay alert when you are out with your pets. These snakes are often found in tall grass, brush, and rocky areas, and a curious nose can quickly turn into an emergency.

Keep your dog on a leash, stay on clear trails, and avoid areas with limited visibility. If you hear a rattling sound, stop and slowly back away.

If your pet is bitten, seek veterinary care immediately. Quick action can make all the difference.

While you're enjoying your St Patty's celebrations, be mindful of your pets and ensure that all alcohol is kept out of their reach! Even small amounts can be dangerous. If you're treating a hangover tomorrow morning, keep the pain relievers away from your pets too. Many common painkillers are very dangerous for both dogs and cats.

Poisonous Mushroom Season Is Here – Urgent Public Safety Alert for Pet Owners

A confirmed case of poisonous mushroom ingestion has been identified at Pioneer Park in Santa Maria. Pet owners are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Amanita species mushrooms, commonly known as Death Cap mushrooms, are highly toxic and often fatal to dogs and humans. These mushrooms may be small or large, often white or brown-stained white, and typically emerge during rainy periods followed by sunshine. They can appear anywhere—including parks, yards, under decks, and other unexpected areas.

Early signs of exposure may be subtle. Vomiting is often the first—and sometimes the only—symptom, but vomiting may not occur at all. If your dog vomits after visiting a park or any area where wild mushrooms may be present, seek immediate emergency veterinary care and request amatoxin testing.

Time is critical. Survival is possible only with rapid hospital treatment shortly after ingestion.

Do not rely on identifying mushrooms yourself. Multiple species can grow together, and finding a non-toxic mushroom does not mean a toxic one wasn’t ingested.

If there is any possibility your dog was exposed to wild mushrooms, treat it as an emergency and go to the nearest veterinary ER immediately.
