What do the Collar Code™️ colors mean? 👇

🤍 White = learning
🧡 Orange = building confidence
💙 Blue = adding real life
💜 Purple = stronger skills
🖤 Black = real-life ready

The important thing to know is this:

The Collar Code™️ is not about rushing dogs through levels.

It is about understanding:
• what your dog can do right now
• what they are ready for next
• where they need more support
• how to make progress feel clearer

Different dogs start in different places depending on age, confidence, environment, and skill level.

That’s okay. That’s the point.

Save this so you can follow along this month as we introduce each level in a little more detail. 🐾

One of the things I love most about The Collar Code™️ is that it gives us a clearer way to understand progress.

It also helps connect the dots between all the different ways we support dogs and families at Sit n Stay.

Because not every dog starts in the same place.

Some dogs are just getting started.
Some are building confidence.
Some are ready for more real-life practice.
Some need help strengthening skills around distractions.

That is exactly why our programs exist the way they do.

Our June classes start today, and they are all part of a bigger path:
• Surviving Puppyhood
• Real World Manners
• Therapy Dog
• Dog School
• Dog School Online
• and of course, Game Plan Calls to help you figure out the best fit

The goal is not to throw random tips at you or make you guess.
The goal is to help you understand what your dog needs next.

If you are not sure which path fits your dog right now, that is exactly what we can help with.

Not sure which path fits? Schedule a FREE Game Plan Call.

Something new is launching at Sit n Stay… and I’m really excited about it. 🎉

It’s called The Collar Code™️.

This idea actually started a few years ago while I was sitting at my son’s karate class, watching the kids work toward their next belt levels. They were so excited. They knew what they were working toward, they could see their progress, and every new level meant something.

I remember thinking:
dog owners should get to feel this too.

Because one of the hardest parts of dog training is not always the training itself. A lot of the time, it’s not knowing:

• what to work on next
• whether your dog is really making progress
• where your dog fits right now
• what kind of support would help most

That is exactly why we created The Collar Code™️ — our simple five-level training progression and certification system:

🤍 White
🧡 Orange
💙 Blue
💜 Purple
🖤 Black

Dogs earn levels as they build real-life skills through positive, relationship-based training.

The bandana is the celebration.

But the training behind it is the real win.

If you want to know where your dog might start, drop your dog’s name in the comments. 👇

A good reminder:
Freedom is not one-size-fits-all.

Some dogs can handle more space in certain situations.
Some dogs need a long line.
Some need a fenced area.
Some need a leash, tether, or more thoughtful management.

And honestly? That is okay.

Some dogs — no matter how loved or how well trained — panic when they get spooked. When that happens, fear can override learning and thinking.

Dogs are not robots.

That is why freedom should not be based on comparison, ego, or what someone else’s dog can do.

It should be based on:
• the individual dog
• the environment
• your own comfort level
• what actually helps everyone relax and be safe

Real freedom is about safety, trust, and being able to enjoy life together.

When people picture “freedom” with their dog, they often picture the same thing:
An off-leash dog running freely, coming back when called, looking easy and carefree.

But I think it is really important to say this:
Off-leash is not always freedom.

Not for every dog.
Not for every person.
Not in every situation.

For me personally, I have a low risk tolerance. So my dogs being off leash does not feel freeing to me. It feels stressful. It feels like scanning the environment, worrying about what could happen, and not really relaxing.

That is not freedom.

For me, freedom looks more like a long line, a safety leash, or a tether. That way I can actually enjoy the picnic, the outing, or the time outside because I know my dog is safe and the people and dogs around us are safe too.

That feels like freedom.

The best kind of freedom is the one that works for the dog in front of you — and for you too.

A lot of people think recall is about one question:
“Will my dog come back?”

But there is another question that matters too:
What kind of risk am I comfortable taking?

Some people would never let their dog off leash outside of a fenced area unless recall is truly solid.

Others take dogs off leash on hiking trails, open spaces, or places where leash laws still apply, hoping it will be okay.

That is not just a training choice.
That is a risk choice.

Because “he’s friendly,”
“she usually comes,”

or “he’s been fine before”
is not the same as a reliable recall.

And the truth is, your dog’s behavior does not happen in a vacuum. It affects:
your dog’s safety

• other dogs
• other people
• kids
• wildlife
• the public spaces we all share

A long line is not failure.
It is smart risk management.

Let’s talk about recall… and let’s talk about risk.

Most people think about the obvious risks first:

• getting hit by a car
• running loose
• getting into a fight
• running up to the wrong dog or person

And yes, those risks are real.

But there is another kind of risk people do not always think about:
the risk of your dog learning they do not really have to come when called.

Every time you call your dog, they are learning something.

They are learning whether that cue matters.

Whether it is worth responding to.
Whether they can ignore you and keep doing what they were doing.

Dogs get good at what they practice.

So if your dog is repeatedly practicing delayed recall, ignoring recall, or only coming when they feel like it, that pattern gets stronger too.

That is why recall is not something we want to casually test before it is ready.

Sometimes the biggest risk is not one dramatic moment.
Sometimes it is the quiet risk of your dog learning your voice is optional.

One of the biggest mindset shifts in dog training is this:

Rehearsed is not the same as understood.

A lot of dogs get really good at performing a skill in one familiar place. That can make it look like they fully “know” it.

But then you take that same dog:
• to the park
• on a walk
• around people
• around dogs
• into a more distracting environment

…and suddenly the skill seems to disappear.

That’s when people often think their dog is being stubborn.

Usually, the dog is not refusing.
Usually, the dog is struggling because the environment is harder, the distractions are bigger, and the skill hasn’t been built there yet.

Dogs do not generalize well. They need help learning that a cue means the same thing in lots of different places.

Sometimes it’s not a big solution. It’s the little things practiced over and over.

“My dog knows this… so why aren’t they doing it?”

I hear this all the time.

Maybe your dog comes when called in the house, but not at the park.
Maybe they walk nicely sometimes, but pull hard toward people or other dogs.
Maybe they can sit perfectly in your kitchen, but outside it feels like they’ve never heard the word before.

It’s easy to think:
“They know this. They’re just choosing not to listen.”

But usually, that’s not what’s happening.

Your dog is not giving you a hard time. They’re having a hard time.

Dogs don’t learn the same way humans do, and they don’t generalize well. So what looks like your dog “knowing” a skill is often just them being successful in a familiar, practiced environment.

The park is not the living room.
The sidewalk is not the kitchen.
A busy public space is not the same as your backyard.

That’s why understanding how dogs learn can be such a light bulb moment. It helps you stop taking it personally and start helping your dog more clearly.

💚 Want help building real-life skills that actually hold up outside the house? We’d love to help.

“My dog knows this.”

I hear this all the time.

And I believe you.

Your dog probably does know it… in the kitchen.

Or the living room.
Or when you have treats.
Or when nothing exciting is happening.

But dogs are very contextual.

That means a dog can understand a skill in one situation and still struggle in another.
So when your dog does not come when called outside, pulls toward another dog, forgets how to sit at the park, or acts like they have never heard their name before…

It may not be stubbornness.
It may be that the picture changed.

The skill got harder.
The distractions got bigger.
The reinforcement history is not strong enough yet.

And the dog needs help.

This is where a clear plan matters.

Because kind training does not mean ignoring the problem.

It means we teach the dog what we do want, set them up to be successful, and practice in a way that actually makes sense to the dog.

That is one of the biggest reasons I created Dog School Online.

Not so you can watch a bunch of videos and be left on your own.

But so you can learn what to practice, why it matters, and how to help your dog build real-life skills.

If this sounds like your dog, let’s talk.
