Meet George. He’s a 10 year old mini donkey. Last week we went out to see him because he wasn’t eating well and not acting like himself. On exam, we found that he was extremely anemic. We started him on meds but without a blood transfusion it would be a very difficult road.

So Dr. Lynne and her externship student, Krystal, did some research and found that they could use horse blood in donkeys. So Dr. Lynne’s horse, Stanley volunteered as a blood donor. We were able to transfuse 1.5 L of blood to George.

Since the transfusion, George has been eating better and playing with his ball more. At his recheck yesterday, his red blood cells had doubled from last week. We’re very happy George is feeling better and hope he continues to recover.

We wanted to share his story because we are proud that we got to try something new to us and that it helped. It proves why we call it “practice” as we are always learning.
