The Orange County Animal Shelter provides safe haven and vet care for hundreds of animals of all ages and descriptions each year. Happily, we have had great success promoting our animals on Petfinder and at Petsmart adoption events. Dozens of animals have been adopted by people who have come from many other states. If so, please let us know! The greater our reach the more homes we will find for th

e animals in our care. Although we are about 1.5 hours away from the Washington, D.C. metro area, it is an easy drive. You can even make a day of it and stop off at country stores, Civil War battlefield sites and a huge mall complex in Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg. And after all, what is a few hours in drive time when you will be meeting your new best friend? If you need help getting here, call us for directions.

BORRRRRED ON A TUESDAY? 🙄

Sugar and Hortense are the last two girls from their property still waiting for homes.

Sugar has officially grown out of her scruffy phase and into one silly, gorgeous girl who is FULL of personality. 🖤

Hortense is still a little more limited with her love. She’s getting there—she just prefers that affection happen on her terms, thank you very much. 😂

Different girls. Different speeds. Same problem:

They need homes to cure this Tuesday boredom. 🐾❤️

Hortense: Hortense is a beautiful 2-year-old buff and white long-haired girl who is still learning that life doesn't have to feel quite so uncertain.

She came from a property where a large number of cats were living together after their owner passed away, and she likely had very little opportunity for individual attention or socialization. Since arriving, Hortense has preferred to take things slowly. She feels safest in quieter spaces and is perfectly content to observe what's happening before deciding whether she'd like to participate.

Hortense is still limited with her affection, but she isn't unfriendly. She's simply a girl who needs more time, patience and gentle handling than some cats do. There is no rushing her, and that's okay. The right person will understand that earning her trust may happen in little steps.

A calm home with someone willing to let Hortense settle in at her own pace would give her the opportunity to continue making progress. Barn, shop or working-cat placements may also be considered if that proves to be a better fit for her.

Sam and Sal are about to have a VERY exciting Tuesday. 😂

These big, brawny 1-year-old brothers are headed for their neuters today and are officially ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!

Together or separately, these handsome orange boys are ready to trade shelter life for forever home(s), comfy couches and humans of their own. 🧡🐾

Amelia is showing hers off while she waits for the one thing she’s still missing—a home of her own.

At 4 months old, her siblings have all been adopted, leaving Amelia wondering when it’s finally HER turn.

Cute face. Excellent toe beans. Forever-home ready.

Surely somebody needs this girl on their couch. ❤️

Tanya is kicking off our Tuesday Boredom Tour with enough tortietude for everybody.

She’s quirky. She’s gorgeous. She’s dilute tortie perfection. And she has absolutely mastered:

LOVE ME.
Okay, that’s enough.
Wait, where are you going?
I DID NOT SAY TOUCH ME AGAIN. 😂

Tanya is approximately 2 years old and brings a little Mean Girl energy mixed with a whole lot of “maybe I actually love you” once she decides you’re worthy.

Basically, Tanya wants a forever home where she can be adored appropriately—and entirely on Tanya’s terms. 💅🐾

Austin heard it was National Dog Walking Appreciation Day and said FINALLY—a holiday worthy of these ears.

At 12 years young, this boy still has places to go, things to sniff and absolutely no intention of doing any of it without a little prance in his step.

And those ears?

We don't control them.
The wind doesn't control them.
Frankly, we're not sure Austin controls them. 😂

But they are FABULOUS.

Grab the leash, take the walk, let them sniff the same blade of grass for six minutes and enjoy the ridiculous little things that make your dog YOUR dog.

Austin certainly plans to. ❤️🐾

LABOR DAY: RUN LIKE YOU’RE LATE FOR WORK! 😂

Working hard or hardly working? Judging by these faces, we’re going with a little of both!

It may be Labor Day and the shelter may be closed to the public, but the animals didn’t get the memo. Breakfast, cleaning, laundry and all the usual shelter-day business still rolls right along.

Our adoptable crew, however, appears to have assigned themselves one job today: RUN.

While they’re busy with that, take a scroll through our Petfinder page and see who’s waiting for a home.
