ONE WHOLE YEAR OF SNICKERS! 🥹🧡🐾

Yesterday marked a year since this cheeky little boy joined the Happy Paws Pack and honestly, it wouldn’t be the same without him.

Four days a week, rain or shine (although preferably NOT rain according to Snickers 😂), he’s waiting at the door ready for his walk.

He brings so much personality, so many laughs and a whole lot of 💩 to every adventure. 😂

But more than anything, I love how much he genuinely LOVES his Happy Paws days. Seeing that little spin when I arrive never gets old. ❤️

Also a big thank you to Cecilia Taylor-Hall for trusting me with your fur baby and our lovely morning chats. We’re so grateful you found us online and gave us a chance 💛

Don’t h@te me but…
Coming back eventually ≠ reliable recall. 👀

As a dog walker, I see SO many dogs off leash whose owners are repeatedly calling them while the dog carries on doing whatever it wants.

A reliable recall means your dog has been trained to turn and come back when called, including around distractions.

Why does it matter?

🐕 The dog they’re running towards might not be friendly.
🐿️ That squirrel might run across a road.
🚪 Your dog might slip through an open door.
🚗 They might unexpectedly jump out of the car.
🦮 A leash can be dropped or break.

And even if you never plan to walk your dog off leash, recall is still one of the most important skills you can teach.

My biggest tips:

🎉 Make coming back FUN.
🦴 Reward generously while you’re teaching it.
🌿 Recall → reward → release them to explore again.
📣 Use an upbeat, consistent cue (not their name! Either HERE or COME) or condition a whistle.
🚫 Never punish your dog for eventually returning.
🪢 Use a long line while you’re building reliability outdoors.
📈 Start easy and gradually add distractions.

And remember: no dog is a robot and no recall is literally infallible. If the environment is beyond your dog’s current level of training, use the leash/long line rather than testing them.

Your goal is to build such a strong reinforcement history that when your dog hears that recall cue, their automatic thought is:

“YES! I’m coming!” 🐶💨

Because recall isn’t just an obedience trick.

It’s a safety skill that could save your dog’s life.

Recall is one of the most important things that you will teach your dog regardless of whether you want them off-leash on your walks or not.

A RELIABLE recall could save your dog’s life.

As a dog walker, I will see someone with their dog off-leash with little to no recall weekly!

It makes me so sad to see as I know one day that dog will unintentionally get itself into an unsafe situation.

Please train your dog to have a RELIABLE recall.

SIDE NOTE: Yes my dog can do this when running after a squirrel etc (and even a deer once) even though he has a high prey drive and when other dogs appear he comes straight back to me. And no he does not wear an e-collar. 💛

Today is National Black Dog Day. 🖤🐾

And this one means something to me because I’ve seen black and darker-coated dogs overlooked in rescue… even puppies!

There’s a commonly discussed phenomenon called Black Dog Syndrome: the idea that darker-coated dogs may sometimes be overlooked by adopters.

Take my foster dog in the first photo. Ozzy 🖤 He was at a shelter in Corona and was passed over by the public until a rescue stepped in.

Why might they be overlooked?

👀 First impressions: facial expressions can be harder to see in a poorly lit photo.

📱 Online adoption: sometimes a dog gets only seconds to catch someone’s attention.

🐶 Appearance matters: research shows physical characteristics can influence which shelter dogs people initially choose.

But here’s what a photograph can’t tell you:

🖤 Who gives the best cuddles.
🖤 Who has the funniest personality.
🖤 Who’ll become your walking buddy.
🖤 Who’ll sleep upside down on your sofa.
🖤 Who might become your absolute best friend.

So today, give the black dog a second look.

DOGS. TRAINING. FAMILY. CHAOS. 🤍

A little look behind the scenes at Happy Paws last week… 🐾

There were Pack Walks, hide & seek with Finnegan, a full pack of six, Little Bear receiving the VIP car treatment 👑 and another puppy training session with the ridiculously cute Koa. 🥹

Behind the dog walking business, real life was doing its thing too, one poorly child + half school days meant I couldn’t make it to the shelter last week 😢, evenings at soccer practice, Friday finished at ice skating and the weekend brought early walks with Zed and, inevitably… a lot of soccer. 😂⚽️

It’s not always glamorous, but I actually love sharing these little glimpses of what goes on behind the walks.

Dogs, puppy training, family life and controlled chaos. 🤍

I had three options this morning… 🐾

I chose to rearrange my morning, get up earlier and fit in an additional walk.

It meant more work for me, but all the dogs got the walk that was right for them (and Zed got a bonus walk).

And I think this is an important part of professional dog walking that owners don’t always get to see.

A Pack Walk isn’t simply putting a group of dogs together because they’re booked on the same day and hoping for the best.

I think about personalities, confidence, energy levels, behaviour, existing relationships and what each individual dog needs.

Sometimes a new dog slots beautifully into an established group.

Sometimes they need time.

And sometimes the best decision is simply “not yet.”

My clients trust me with something incredibly important to them, and I don’t take that lightly.

So I’ll always try to make it work but never at the expense of making the right decision for the dogs. 🤍🐾
