🎆🐶 **What Is Your Dog Trying to Tell You This Fourth of July?**
Not every frightened dog shakes or hides.
Our dogs "talk" to us with their body language, and during fireworks, they often tell us they're stressed long before they panic. Learning to recognize these signs can help you comfort them before their fear escalates.
👀 **Watch for these subtle signs of stress:**
🐾 Lip licking when there's no food around
🐾 Yawning when they aren't sleepy
🐾 Whale eye (showing the whites of their eyes)
🐾 Pinned-back ears
🐾 Tucked tail
🐾 Panting, pacing, or trembling
🐾 Hiding or trying to squeeze into small spaces
🐾 Clinginess—or the opposite, wanting to be left completely alone
🐾 Refusing treats they normally love
As fear increases, some dogs may begin barking excessively, scratching at doors, trying to escape, or even becoming defensive if they feel trapped.
❤️ **How can you help?**
• Bring your pets indoors before the fireworks begin.
• Close curtains or blinds and play calming music or the TV.
• Give them a quiet room where they can choose to retreat.
• Stay calm—your dog looks to you for reassurance.
• Never punish a fearful dog. Fear isn't bad behavior; it's an emotional response.
Remember, every dog is different. Some will snooze through the fireworks, while others need a little extra comfort. Paying attention to their body language is one of the best ways to let them know they're safe.
