Dogs and Fireworks – 8 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe and Calm on July 4th

More dogs run away during the Fourth of July than any other day of the year according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Although many people have fun during the holiday, the booming fireworks and noisy celebrations can be very nerve-wracking for any animal — not just dogs.
It can be stressful for any pet not used to noise and things that are going on the Fourth of July, Fireworks set off by individuals and families are a bigger concern than community fireworks display, although bringing pets to community displays is heavily discouraged.
However, if they are outside, they should be on a leash, dogs' reactions can range from subtle, such as panting and pacing, to stronger reactions such as running away, shaking, hiding and some can even turn destructive by digging into a carpet or couch.
Here are a few tips to make Independence Day less scary for furry family members.

1. For pets outside they should be brought in if possible. For pets that are inside, pet owners should turn on music and a TV for background noise so they don't hear or see fireworks."
2. The pets should be kept indoors throughout the night, except for when they need to excrete waste. Exits such as cat flaps and windows should be blocked off.
3. Pet owners staying home should keep their pets company. Don't leave your pet alone,
4. If the pet panics, the pet owner should not become irritated or try to over comfort the pet. They should try to distract the pet with a game or toy.
5. Provide a hiding place for pets. some people who have used laundry rooms as places for pets to hide in during thunderstorms.
6. Feeding your pet, a high-carb meal will make them feel more sleepy and calm during the evening.
7. People can also set off small fireworks ahead of time — a tactic Cary said he and his neighbors have used to get Cary's reindeer accustomed to larger fireworks.
8. We strongly encourage pet owners to have microchips on their pets and to take pictures of their pets to show throughout their neighborhood in case they ever go missing.
Like pets, precautions should also be taken for livestock. Cattle and horses can be startled, They should be in a safe place and properly restrained."
If these tips aren't enough, there are other resorts such as a Thunder Shirt that you can buy at your local pet supply store, tranquilizers and anti-anxiety medications for pets and livestock.

We need to beat the bushes here! Can you help with a donation and help us get people to donate from your area of the woods to www.sdcd.org ? Karmel , the Service Dog that we sent to Connor blew out jer ACL on her Right hind leg and needs surgery. Connor her boy with POTS is having to finish out the school year online because Karmel cannot go with him to school. The longer we dely the surgery the longer she is on pain meds which translates to not being alert enough to let Connor know when he is about to have an episode which could be life threatening! They can donate through our donate button on our website and any donations coming in will go to the SDCD Trust Account for Karmel till we reach $6,500. Please beat the bushes! Thank you for your generocity and concern.
