MEET GEMMA! 🐾

This gorgeous girl is Gemma, an 11-month-old dilute tortie with the kind of striking face you can't scroll past. She's spayed, vaccinated, and ready for her forever home!

Gemma's a little shy when you first meet her — shelter life isn't her favorite, and who could blame her? But give her a little time to warm up and you'll find a sweet, independent, and curious cat who knows exactly what she wants. She's not much of a lap cat, but she's affectionate in her own laid-back way, and she'll happily bat around a soft ball or mouse toy when the mood strikes.

She gets along great with the other cats here at the shelter. We don’t know if she’s ever been around dogs, so how she might react to living in a home with a pup is an unknown.

Gemma is just looking for someone patient enough to let her come out of her shell — and we think she'll be worth the wait. 💛

WANT TO MEET HER?
Stop by and visit Gemma in the cat room, Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–2:30pm. You can fill out an adoption application while you're here, or grab one online at www.shorespca.com. Questions? Email us at [email protected] or call 757-787-7385 (Tue–Sat, 10am–3pm).

Today is National Pet Choking Prevention Day, and as the old saying reminds us, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Be proactive to help keep Fido or Fluffy safe. The five most common choking hazards for dogs are balls, sticks, chew toys, bully sticks and long-term chews, and food packaging. The five most common choking hazards for cats are string, window blind cords, fishing pole type toys, plastic, and rubber bands and hair ties.

🚨EXCUSE ME, HAS ANYONE SEEN MY FOREVER HOME? 🚨

Hi. My name is Bentley. I am 14 pounds of Big Ear Energy, and I have opinions.

I'm a 2-year-old Chihuahua and terrier mix, and yes, I know—the ears. I know! They pick up satellite signals and also the sound of a snack bag opening from three rooms away. (You have been warned!)

Here's my honest dating profile:
• Neutered and vaccinated
• Devoted once I trust you
• Older kids=fine
• Quiet home preferred
• No other dogs, please
• Not a cat person

I'll be real with you: I'm shy at first. Like, really shy. We may need more than one date before I decide you're worthy of my loyalty. But once you earn it? I'm clingy in the best way. Velcro dog energy. You'll never p*e alone again.

I'm not looking for chaos. I want a cozy couch, a quiet house, someone who will give me their undivided attention, maybe a throw blanket situation. Is that too much to ask? I don't think so.

Microchips matter, as our friends from the Cornell Feline Health Center explain in this infographic! If you adopt a dog or cat from SPCA Eastern Shore, it will come with a microchip. If you rescue a stray, though, please get it microchipped. And make sure that you keep your registration info up to date! If Fido or Fluffy wanders away from home, you want to make it as easy as possible for them to be reunited with you.

Words are woefully inadequate to express the sorrow we feel at the passing of our former shelter manager, Sheila Crockett, and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to her beloved husband, Rodger, and her family for their loss.

Sheila was with SPCA Eastern Shore for 17 years, beginning her association with the shelter as a staff member. She was with us in 2005, helping accomplish our transition from being the housing facility for Animal Control to becoming a private no-kill, non-profit, limited-intake facility. The position she held for most of her time with us was that of shelter manager, and in that capacity Sheila became the heart and soul of our organization, managing the day-to-day operation of the shelter and making sure that we lived up to the organization’s pledge to “provide lots of love, food, shelter, and medical care for cats and dogs on the Eastern Shore as we search to find them adoptive homes.”

It was Sheila who developed a successful partnership with the Virginia Beach SPCA to bring their Neuter Scooter to the Shore on a regular basis to provide low cost spay-neuter surgeries for the pets of Shore residents. That program continues today and is a significant part of the legacy that she leaves us from her career with the shelter.

Sheila viewed her position as shelter manager as that of a public servant, and she had a gift for dealing with the public. Over the years, we often heard feedback from shelter visitors about how well they had been treated by Sheila.

Her love for and devotion to our shelter animals seemed to know no bounds. Many was the time that Sheila went “above and beyond.” Although no one was on duty at the facility overnight, if an animal needed 24-hour care, Sheila would take it home with her when she left at the end of the day. If the weather forecast indicated that snow, a hurricane, or some other extreme weather condition might make it impossible for staff to get to work on time the next day, Sheila would spend the night at the shelter to make sure that the animals were fed and cared for on their regular schedule.

The collage below shows our colleague and friend as we’ll remember her. Rest in peace, Sheila.

❤ Meet Luna ❤
Hi I am Luna, I am a 10 month old female Shepard mix.
I was adopted in Washington DC at an adoption event in June 2025. I am spayed and up to date on my vaccines, and I weigh in at 38 pounds. I shouldn't weigh to much more than 45 pounds when full grown.

I was originally listed as an only dog in the home at the other shelter, but I did well at a meet and greet and came home with a new fur partner. However once home here on the Shore me and the original dog in the home stopped getting along. So I am fishing for a home, once again.

The adoptee did say Luna did very well with her chickens.
Luna is loving and gentle with all humans and has a very laid back temperament and loves affection. She could do well in a home with children, but will most likely need to be the only dog in the home due to her previous history.
She is "laid back" and has a very sweet disposition.

If you think you may be interested in adopting Luna you can stop by the shelter any Tuesday-Saturday from 10a.m.-2:30p.m. for a kennel walk through. (We have no same day adoptions and an approved adoption application is required to be scheduled for a meet and greet.)

You can pick up an adoption application while you are here or print one off on our website anytime www.shorespca.com.
You can also email us and ask that an adoption application be attached and sent back to you at [email protected]
Please call the Shelter Tuesday-Saturday 10am.-3:00p.m. with any questions at 757-787-7385.

Iggy's Story

Hello my name is Iggy. I am a Chow/Golden retriever mix and I am a senior male at around 9 years old. I weigh in at around 40 pounds I am neutered and up to date on my vaccinations.

I have spent some extra time at the SPCA as I was positive for heartworms. I have completed that treatment and now I am looking for a home to rest my senior bones.

I do get along with other dogs. I am gentle and curious. Once I get to know you I am affectionate, and attentive. I am low maintenance, but enjoy and can benefit from the occasional brushing as I have a short to medium thick coat.

If you are looking for a calm quiet companion to watch tv with, and love for the rest of my life, I may be just the guy for you.
I may take a brief moment to warm up to strangers, but once I do it doesn't take long.

I do get along with other dogs but it is uncertain how I would do in a home with cats or other animals. I can be cat tested here at the shelter.

I have lived with children in the past so at this age older children in the home should be fine. I will most likely enjoy a calm quiet environment in my senior years.

If you think you may be interested in adopting Iggy you can stop by the shelter any Tuesday-Saturday from 10a.m.-2:30p.m. for a kennel walk through.

(We have no same day adoptions and an approved adoption application is required to be scheduled for a meet and greet.
