We established biopetcollars.com in early 2008 in a small town in Upstate New York and began making collars and leashes out of the frustration with not being able to find a collar for our boxer who had severe skin allergies to many things and could not wear a collar for more then a couple hours before she started uncontrollably scratching. We then set out to find a material that she could comfort

ably wear that would be durable (as she loved the outdoors) attractive and economical. After talking with an Amish friend of ours who manufactures horse harnesses, he turned us to a material called BioThane which he uses to make his harnesses. We purchased a few collars for our boxer and immediately discovered the benefits of BioThane and realized its potential; our boxer could now comfortably wear a collar all the time. After numerous friends and family members asked where we got the collars we decided to learn how to make them ourselves. All of the products and equipment used to make these items are purchased directly from the Amish and are completely hand made by ourselves. All of our hardware: buckles, rings, rivets and snaps are extremely durable nickle plated steel. To make our collars as strong as possible we use the strongest rivets called tubular rivets, these are used on our 3/4" and 1" wide collars and leashes. On our 1/2" collars and leashes we use what are called jiffy rivets, these are used in place of tubular rivets because the material is much narrower. Sadly, Ava our Weimaraner left us 2 weeks ago 😢, She is the reason we started this business and our hearts ache for her loss. But with every sad time there is also a time of renewal and rejuvenation. Today we welcome Lincoln our little 10wk old Hound mix to the biopetcollars family. We can't wait to see what he grows up to be 💕

How do I clean my collars and leashes???

Our products are weather, mud and waterproof and easy to clean with just a little soap and water.

How to clean - in 5 easy steps

1. Put your leash or collar in the sink and get some soap and a non abrasive sponge ready.

2. Run some warm water and use the soap to make a nice bubble bath for your leash/collar.

Use the sponge to wipe off any dirt on your leash.

3. Marvel at the ease of cleaning and the comparison from dirty to clean.

4. Remove the leash from the water and dry off with a rag or towel.

5. And voila! You should have restored your vibrant and colorful leash.

Special Considerations:

Light coloured BioThane® that is matched with brass hardware may slightly discolor the BioThane® over time due to the natural tarnishing of brass over time.

These stains can be lightened with a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda or salt. Make a paste and apply it with a soft cloth to the areas you wish to lighten. Rinse off and repeat where necessary then dry with a cloth.

For the Hardware:

Brass plated, nickel plated and even stainless steel hardware may rust over time if left in the elements for too long. Rainbow, rose gold and black hardware can lose colour over time. Other than the brass, stainless steel hardware, the rest are made of zinc alloy, rust-resistant & functional.

To keep your hardware looking nice and shiny for as long as possible:

Dry or hang to dry after it has been used in wet conditions.

Do not clean with a wire brush or tools that may remove the coating.

Do not machine wash as it may scratch the hardware.

Brass inevitably tarnishes and patinas over time. To restore its shine use the mixture mentioned above of lemon juice and baking soda or salt. Make a paste and apply with a cloth to the areas you wish to lighten. Rinse off and repeat where necessary, then dry with a cloth t

Biothane is incredibly strong. The 3/8” width has a tested break strength of 375 lbs, the 1/2” width has a break strength of 500 lbs, and the 3/4" width has a break strength of 750 lbs.
