PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Delhi. This is the fourth laboratory confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County in 2026.
A rabid raccoon exposed two dogs in the town of Delhi. The raccoon was sent for testing to the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. Both dogs are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and received a booster. There was one human exposure and this individual began Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Delaware County’s next free rabies vaccination clinic is on October 5th from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at the Deposit Highway Garage, 192 Front St, Deposit, NY 13754.
Once infected, rabies is a virus that has 100% fatality rate when left untreated, in mammals including humans. Public Health recommends the following precautions to protect yourself and your family from possible exposure to rabies:
β€’ Report any sick or strange acting wildlife
β€’ Vaccinate pets and livestock. New York State law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age. Vaccinating your domestic animal not only provides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people.
β€’ Vaccination is also recommended for livestock with frequent human contact.
β€’ Do not feed wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.
β€’ Do not feed strays. According to Public Health Law an owner is defined as any person keeping, harboring, or having charge or control of or permitting any dog, cat or domesticated ferret to remain on or be lodged or fed within such person’s house yard or premises.
β€’ Do not approach an unknown animal, either wild or domestic, especially if it is acting in a strange or unusual manner.
β€’ Report all animal bites and any contact with bats to the Health Department in your county. Human rabies can be prevented after exposure by administering a series of shots.
β€’ Keep garbage cans tightly covered and avoid storing any food outside.
β€’ Children should be instructed to tell an adult immediately if they were bitten or scratched by any animal.
β€’ If a pet not up to date on its rabies vaccinations comes in contact with rabid or suspected rabid animal the pet must be quarantined for six months.
β€’ Vaccinated pets that come in contact with rabid or suspected rabies animal must be given a booster rabies vaccination within five days of the contact.
Exposure to rabies can be fatal for a human or a pet. Be sure your dogs, cats and ferrets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Vaccinated pets serve as a buffer between rabid wildlife and man. Protect them, and you may reduce your risk of exposure to rabies.
Public Health recommends that pet owners take advantage of any of the free remaining rabies clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets in Delaware County. Pre-registration is suggested for all clinics. You can pre-register at http://health.ny.gov/go2clinic
To report a suspected rabid animal call Delaware County Public Health Services at 607-832-5200. For more information call 607-832-5200 or visit our website at www.delawarecountypublichealth.com

HOBBIES:
Outside of veterinary medicine, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, canning, arts and crafts, and listening to audiobooks.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT SVC:
I love the personable and family-oriented atmosphere at Southside Veterinary Clinic. I appreciate the clinic’s dedication to building strong client relationships, actively immersing themselves in the community, and consistently providing exceptional patient care. I completed an externship here before graduating, and within my first day, I knew this was where I wanted to work and grow as a veterinarian.

PETS:
I share my home with several beloved pets, each with their own unique personality.
Lily, my Old English Mastiff, may look intimidating but is truly the biggest baby and prefers to hide behind me when she gets nervous.
Evie, my pitbull mix, is proudly β€œdaddy’s girl,” while Penny the beagle is always ready for a good snuggle.
I also have seven cats: Momma Kitty (the scaredy cat), Teddy (Mr. Love), Stevie (the hunter), Scrapie (the sleepy one), Hannah (the princess), Munchkin (the gentleman), and Luna (the boss). Three of the cats were recently welcomed into our family after being abandoned on our dead-end road.

VETERINARY INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE:
My passion for animals began at a young age while working on a farm milking cows. I graduated from SUNY Delhi in 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree and Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) certification. After graduation, I worked in an Emergency and Specialty Veterinary Clinic as an LVT before attending Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, where I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in May 2026.

WHAT WOULD YOUR SUPERPOWER BE:
My ideal superpower would be the ability to snap my fingers and instantly have an entire room cleaned and organized β€” no more chasing one mess after another!

WHAT ANIMAL MOST CLOSELY MATCHES YOUR PERSONALITY:
I would most closely relate to a capybara for being kind, easy going, friendly, empathetic, and affectionate demeanor

We love getting to see litters for their wellness exam, first Distemper/Parvo combo vaccine and deworming before they head off to their forever homes. So excited we will get to continue to see at least 2 of the puppies from this litter! 🩷 πŸ’™
